THE MICHIGAN DAILY Ha Jones Homer Win for Milxi By- The Associated Press MILWAUKEE - Reserve first baseman Nippy Jones drilled his first home run in the 11th inning for the National League-leading Braves last night as Milwaukee defeated the New York Giants, 6-3, in a battle of homers. The ,homer by Jones, combined with the flawless relief hurling of righthander Gene Conley, put the, Braves a half-game ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals. Jones was purchased from Sacramento of the Pacific Coast League as pro- tection after Joe Adcock, Milwau- kee's first baseman, broke his leg. The Giants collected all of their runs on homers, by Hank Sauer, starting pitcher Ruben Gomez and Ed Bressoud. Ed Mathews also belted one for Milwaukee. The victory, his fourth against five defeats, went to Conley who took over for starter Lew Burdette in the ninth and didn't give up a hit in his three innings. Conley retired nine Giants in a row, strik- ing out one. The defeat was charged to Stu Miller, the third Giant hurler. Redlegs 6, Dodgers 5 CINCINNATI - Cincinna- ti's 'Redlegs blew a four-run lead last night, then put together the winning run on a double .by Her- schell Freeman and a single by Johnny Temple in the 11th inning to take the National League third place away from Brooklyn's Dod- gers with a 6-5 victory over the Bums. \ Ace reliefer Freeman collected the win after taking over in the Ith inning. He got into trouble, in' the 11th, dealing out a double and a single, but got free again when Ransom Jackson singled to outfielder Wally Post whose throw caught Gil Hodges trying for home. * * * Cardinals 4, Pirates 3 ST. Mrs. Sanford is the attractive wife of the Phils' surprising rook- ie righthander. The word "rookie" should ,be used with understand- ing because Jack - while a new- comer in the major leagues -- is 28. The big boy has an amazing freshman record with 13 winsI against only three losses. He's leading the National League in strikeouts as well as victories. And there can be no denying his per- formance has kept the Phils in contention for the pennant. The obvious question about Sanford has been: How come a pitcher as classy as this fellow never reached the big time until be's 28? There was an overall slackening of pace in the second round com- pared with the zippy opening led by Bolt's breaking of the course record by a stroke. In organized baseball sfhce 1948, his best pre-Phillies mark was a 16-8 record with Schenectady in 1952. Sanford said recently that he had been upset when the Phillies failed to britlg him up after his 1952 success. But the righthander said he had a little chat with himself in spring training this year. "I've got to make it," Sanford told Sanford. "I'm married now and we have a little girl. I have to get that big league money." Sanford is quick to state that his marital status has changed his pitching. He's steadier now, does- n't get mad so often, isn't wild in the pinch. He feels, he said, he just can't afford the luxury of "blowing my top the way I used to." l y 's r r r i E E FOR RENT OLD GERMAN RESTAURANT ANN ARBOR'S FINEST, FINEST IN MUSIC AND FINEST IN FOOD TAKE-OUT DINNERS Select from our entire Menu OPEN FROM 11 A.M. to 12 P.M.
