LOWELL P.RRY
.Steezer coaching aide

Perry Accepts
Coaching Job
Lowell Perry, '52, recently signed
as assistant coach in charge of
ends for the Pittsburgh Steelers
of the National Football' League.
Perry, a star halfback during
the 1950 and 1951 seasons for
Mi1~chigan, thus becomes the first
z Negro coach in the history of the
league.
A resident of Ypsilanti, he
played his rookie season with the
Steelers last year, suffering a frac-
tured pelvis and dislocated hip in
a game with the New York Giants.
He was in St. Joseph Mercy Hos-
Spital for 13 weeks.
Steeler President Athur J.
Rooney said he was "delighted"
that Perry accepted the offer.

Michigan's thirst for a national
collegiate track champion finally
received quenching in the hulking
form of Dave Owen, who would
certainly not object to being called
"Champ" except out of sheer
modesty.
One of sports' greatest ex-
ponents of guts, grittiness and
grim determination, Owen heaved
the 16-lb. spheroid 59'5/4" on July
15 to claim Michigan's first indi-
vidual NCAA track title in four
years.
No Coincidence
It is not mere coincidence that
Owen's last appearance for the
Maize and Blue was his best ever.
For that has been the format of
his three years on the team: con-
satimprovement.
And he has far from reached
his peak. Coach Don Canham pre-
dicted earlier in the year that
Owen would become the fourth
person ini the history of the event
to reach the ultimate of goals, the
60' put..
Will Be Busy
Despite exhausting his eligibility
at Michigan (he stillhas a year
to go for his degree in engineer-
ing), Owen figures to be kept busy
shoving the little weight-loaded
ball around the. country and. even
more likely, overseas.

The highest honor any track-
man can obtain is to be presented
a gold medal in the Olympics, and
Owen actually receives a break
in regard to this 'goal. He will
have to serve his stint with the
armed forces after graduation, and
by the time he is through, 1960
will have rolled around.
Eyes Service Competition
Uncle Sam's athletes are always
presented with enough opportuni-
ties to display their talents while
in the service, which should pro-
vide Owen the chance to improve
to the fullest of his capabilities.
The record that this year's cap-
tain has broken and the champion-
ships that he holds are too nu-
merous to recount in full detail,
and it is difficult to say which of
them he cherishes most.
Swept Conference
He has made a clean sweep of
both the indoor and outdoor Con-
ference gocwns for the past two
years, won the Drake Relays with
a record toss of 57'51/2" and come
in first in the Ohio Relays as well
as the Michigan State Relays.

SU Game
Sold Out
All individual game tickets for
the Michigan-Michigan State
football game, scheduled for
Ann Arbor on Oct. 12, have
been sold.
This was announced last
Tuesday, June 18, by Athletic
Director Fritz Crisler.
Last year the game became
a sellout no sooner than July
17, almost a month later.
The Ohio State game and
possibly the Iowa (Homecow-
ing) game are also expected to
be sellouts.
