Four Categories Mantle Hits For Cycle In 106 Win By The Associated Press NEW YORK - Mickey Mantle walloped a tape-measure home run, a three-run triple, a double and a single last night as New York's first-place Yankees moved to a 512-game 'lead with a 10-6 victory over the second-place Chi- cago White Sox, who made a fight of it for seven innings on walks and singles. Mantle, whose triple capped a five-run seventh inning that junk- ed a 6-4 Chicago lead in the open- er of this crucial three-game set, became the first American Leaguer to hit for the cycle since June 4, 1952, when Larry Doby, then with Cleveland, did it against Boston. The four-for-five night hoisted Mantle back into the AL bat lead with a .367 average. Boston's Ted Williams slipped to second at .360 with one hit in three trips against Kansas City. The Yankees, blowing a 3-0 lead set up on Harry Simpson's two- run homer . in the first and Mantle's 26th homer of the year, estimated at 465 feet into the deep right-center field bleachers in the second, leveled the Sox with only ,three hits in the big seventh. * * * Red Sax 1, Athletics 0 BOSTON-Billy Consolo singled home the game's only run as Bos- ton edged Kansas City 1-0 last night behind the 10-hit pitching of Frank hullivan. Outhit, 10-8, the Red Sox need- ed an error by the A's to help them push across their unearned tally. Jackie Jensen singled with one out in the fourth inning. Norm Zauchin followed with what ap- peared to be a cinch double-play ball at Joe DeMaestri but the shortstop threw into right field. On the play Jensen moved to third from where he scored on Consolo's single. * * * Tigers 5, Orioles 2 BALTIMORE - Southpaw Billy Hoeft stopped the Baltimore Ori- oles on. seven hits last night as the Detroit Tigers won, 5-2, and moved two games ahead of Balti- more in the battle for fifth place in the American League. Hoeft needed relief from Harry Byrd for the final out as Balti- more threatened in the ninth in- ning. and the latest figures show that Aaron is the leader with seven. Only contributions for which a player receives credit for a run or runs-batted in count. A steal of home does not count. Close behind Aaron in the clutch department are Don Hoak of Cin- cinnati and Bill Skowron of the New York Yankees. Hoak has pro- duced six game-winners while Skowron tops the American League with five. Aaron's key blows have come against Philadelphia and Pitts- burgh twice each and Brooklyn, New York and Cincinnati once each. AYLP., BOB SKINNER ... two homers By The Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS -The Chicago White Sox purchased centerfielder Ted Beard from Indianapolis of the American Assn. yesterday and ordered his to report to Yankee Stadium immediately to join the club in its series with league-lead- ing New York. The 36-yr.-old Beard was 'bat- ting .342 for the Indians. His hits included 19 doubles, 12 triples and 10 home runs. This is Beard's second shot at the majors. His first was with the Pittsburgh Pirates several years ago. * * * Record Accepted LONDON - Jack Davis's uphill hurdles race in Bendigo, Australia, last November was ratified yester- day by the International Amateur Athletic Assn. as equalling the -world record. Davis, a member of the U.S. Olympic team, ran the 120-yd. hurdles in 13.4 despite the handi- cap of a grass surface and an up- bill course. He set the record orig- inally in the U.S. Olympic team trials. * * * Masterson Escapes Fire ELLICOTT CITY, Md. - Walt Masterson, fireballing pitcher for the Washington Senators a decade ago, quickly pulled his car to the side of the road and jumped out yesterday when flames burst from under the hood. Buhl allowed only one batter to get as far as second base as the Braves held their one-game edge over Brooklyn. Stan Lopata, getting one of the four walks off Buhl, went to sec- ond base in the fourth inning when Harry Anderson beat out a slow bounder with two men out. Rip Repulski groundcd out to end the threat. * * * Dodgers 1, Cardinals 0 ST. LOUIS-Brooklyn's Johnny Podres shut out the St. Louis Cardinals with a masterful five- hitter last night, 1-0, besting Sam "Toothpick" Jones, who gave the Dodgers just three hits. Podres never before had pitched a complete game at St. Louis, In seven previous tries spread over four seasons. In reversing his luck, for his eighth triumph against three defeats, he allowed only one runner to reach third. The Dodgers scored their run in the second inning, the one lss than-neat frame Redbird loser Jones experienced. The Dodgers kept their mid- summer pennant drive going. It was their 11th victory in 13 games and kept them a game behind first place Milwaukee. * * * Cubs 4, Giants 0 CHICAGO-Rookie Dick Drott mowed down the New York Giants with 14 strikeouts yesterday and yielded only four hits in pitching the Chicago Cubs to a 4-0 triumph. The strapping righthander, re- cently turned 21, boosted his strikeout mark for the season to 112 and his won-lost record to 9-8. It was his third shutout. The former Cincinnati high school star nearly matched his 15 strikeouts of last May 26 when he hurled the Cubs to a 7-5 victory over the Milwaukee Braves. The 15 stands as the major league high so far this season, and was only two shy of Dizzy Dean's Na- tional League record set in 1933. The Cubs backed Drott with eight hits off an assortment of four Giant pitchers. They bunched four of them for three runs in the fouth inning that sent Ray Mon- zant, making his first start, to the., showers. Pirates 6, Redlegs 3 CINCINNATI - Pittsburgh's Pirates twice blew a one-run lead last night before punching out three runs on four hits and an error in the 15th inning that trim. med Cincinnati's Redlegs, 6-3. Bob Skinner belted two home runs for Pittsburgh. Pirate starter Vernon Lawi' pitched his way through all but, the last two outs of th. marathon' game, dealing out nine scattered hits to the Redlegs. Dick Groat singled in what proved to be the winning run.
