Robinson, on the comeback trail Golf Tourney Set'To Crown New Champ ROCKFORD, Ill. (P) - The Western Amateur Golf Tourna- ment was assured of a, new cham- pion Monday as Hillman Robbins Jr. of Memphis walloped defend- ing titlist Bruce Cudd, Portland, Ore., 8 and 6 in the 36-hole quar- ter 'finals. The wiry 23-year-old Memphis State star, 1954 National Inter- collegiate champion, moved into today's double round semifinals at the parched Rockford Country Club against the home course vet- eran, Alex Welsh. Y lajor League: IStandings after a shot at the song and dance racket, was in almost complete command except for the sixth round, when he was knocked to his knees by a left hook and right to the head. He made a three-point landing, then got to his knees and took the nine count. Judge Frank Carter scored it 56- 54 for Robinson and referee Jack Donie had the same figures. Judge Jack Silver gave it to Castellani by 56 to 54. The Associated Press card showed Robinson the winner 57-53. Concentrates on Body Robinson, 34, concentrated his attack . on Castellani's body throughout the fight, shifting to the head only when the Cleveland fighter lowered his guard. In the eighth round, Robinson opened up with both hands to the head briefly, long enough to shake Castellani with a series of left and rights. Rocky, obviously hurting, hung on to last out the round. DETROIT (R) - Johnny Palmer, who's supposed to be too nice a guy to win in tough golf competition, and Tommy Bolt, who. can be tough as a billy goat out on the links, scored a pair of notable victories in the second round of the PGA championship yesterday as two "sudden death" rounds re- duced the field to 16 players. Palmer, a finalist in the 1949 PGA championship but more often a first round victim, ousted de- fending champion Chick Harbert 1-up. Bolt Downs Snead Bolt trimmed three-time winner Sammy Snead for the second time in as many match play duels, 3 and 2, then jovially remarked he "felt sorry" of Sam. This match, a replay of their heated 39-hole quarter-final duel at St. Paul last year, drew the bulk of a crowd of about 3,000 that piled into the Meadowbrook Course .to see some torrid golf on a steamy day. But compared to last year's match, when Bolt threatened to quit in the middle, it was an anti- climax. Bolt was ahead all the way Rocky Offered Half Million ROME (P)-The sports paper Corriere Dello Sport said yes- terday that an Italian promot- er has offered world heavy- weight champion Rocky Marci- ano half a million dollars for a title bout with European Champ Franco Cavicchi. as Snead's erratic putter, which had worked well during two days of qualifying, acted up again. As a result of yesterday's two 18-hole rounds-the short matches which the pros hate - the tourna- ment was left without a single ex-champion as it moved into the 36-hole stage beginning today. Ex-Champs Beaten Not only did Harbert and Snead go out, but Walter Burkemo, 1953 champion and runner-up to Har- bert last year, was beaten in the first round by Cary Middlecoff, the' winning-est player of the pro golf season, "and older ex-champions Gene Sarazen and Vic Ghezzi went out in the second. Jack Fleck of Davenport, Iowa, the 1955 U.S. Open champion also was among the winners, defeating Jay Herbert of Woodmere, N. Y. Lake Huron Boat Race Begins AMERICAN W Chicago ... New York ..
