SlYLY 8,1954 THE MICflIGAN DAILY PAGE THREE Pern t Races iget Indians Split Double Bill With Tigers Yankees Take Pair from A's DETROIT (N) - Harvey Kuenn's 11th inning home run-a 35-foot drive into the upper left field deck -broke up a tense scoreless duel and gave the Detroit Tigers a 1-0 victory over the Cleveland Indians Monday in the second game of a doubleheader. The Indians captured the open- er 13- as Bill Glynn, a light-hit- ting first baseman, hammered three straight home runs. Kuenn's dramatic homer, only his third of the season, halted Cleveland's eight-game winning streak and gave George Zuverink the mod over Don Mossi in a bril- liant pitching duel. The loss also shaved the Indians' league lead to three and a half games over the New York Yan- kees, who swept their doublehead- er with the Philadelphia Athletics. a,* * * YANKS 7-11, A's 4-2 PHILADELPHIA (P)--The New ? York Yankees-after 13 fruitless tries-won their first doubleheader in almost a year Monday with an old-fashioned Bronx Bomber slug- ging attack that subdued the Phil- adelphia Athletics 7-4 and 11-2 at Connie Mack Stadium. Ever since last August the Yan- kees have been frustrated in try- ing to take both ends of a twin bill. The best they could do until Monday was a split. In the first game, consecutive home runs by Joe Collins and Gene Woodling plus a run-scored double by Woodling proved the margin of victory. Veteran reliefer Johnny Sain saved the fourth win of the year for Harry Byrd who has yet to complete a game this season. In the nightcap, a walk to Col- lins, a triple by Mickey Mantle and Bill Renna's misplay when the score-board, let two runs in to start the sixth inning. Then Irv Noren hit the first of two home runs in the game over the right field wall to score Yogi Berra who COLLEGIATE-CUTS A SPECIALTY!! The two triumphs kept the Giants 3% games in front of Brooklyn in the National League race. s Rhodes' third homer in the last two days came after Whitey Lock- man and Al Dark singled off Mur- ry Dickson to open the fifth inning of the second game. Rhodes, play- ing left field in place of Monte SIrvin, alsohhomered in the fourth einning of the first game. The Phils hadn't scored a run in 36 innings at the Polo Grounds, o having been shut out four straight times, until they got to Ruben Go- e mez for a score in the first inning of the second game. They knocked t out Gomez in the second inninig d but were held off by Johnny Mc- h Call, Ramon Monzant and Hout P Wilhelm the rest of the way while g the Giants rallied to win on Rhodes' e home run. It was Pierce's first complete game since May 19, and his fourth win against five defeats. An error by Sam Mele in the first inning of the opener provided the Sox with the winning run. Min- nie Minoso beat out a bunt, stole second and came home when Mele dropped Matt Batts' fly to left with two out. Cass Michaels punched outa two-run single in the eighth inning against Don Larsen who went all the way for his ninth defeat. He's tack in the first game with a hom- er and three singles.
