Lemon, now 10-5, held the Red Sox hitless until his pitching rival Skinny Brown bounced a one-out single over the head of third base- man Al Smith in the sixth inning of the nightcap. The twin triumphs gave Cleve- land a 13-1 margin against the Red Sox this season. The Indians now have won seven of their last eight in the tight American League penant scramble. Feller, now 8-1, scored his sev- opener on a seven-hitter as Vic Wertz knocked in four runs with his second and third round trippers of the season. Wertz hit both of his homers off starter and loser Frank Sullivan. * * * YANKEES 4-11, WHITE SOX 3-1 NEW YORK (-Mickey Mantle starred at bat and Johnny Sain and Harry Byrd performed bril- lianty on the mound as the New York Yankees swept both ends of a doubleheader from the Chicago White Sox Thursday 4-3 and 11-1. The twin victories enabled the Yankees to stay within half a game of the Cleveland Indians who also swept a doubleheader, whipping the Boston Red Sox 6-3 and 5-2. Mantle collected four hits and drove in two runs in each game. His single in the eight inning of the opener tied the score at 3-3 and his homer in the 10th broke up the game. Sain, making his 31st relief ap- pearance, won his fifth game a- gainst two losses and Byrd won his sixth decision against five defeats. The White Sox now trail the Cleve- land Indians by 6 games. TIGERS 9, ATHLETICS 4 PHILADELPHIA (-A pair of two-run homers by Jim Delsing and Harvey Kuenn and bases- empty round trippers by Wayne Belardi and Frank Bolling over- powered the Philadelphia Athletics as the Detroit Tigers took a 9-4 decision before a sparse crowd of 1,675 Thursday night. Singles by Lou himmer, Vic Power and Bill Wilson gave the A's a one-run lead in the first, but in the third Tiger hurler Ray Herbert singled and Kuenn hom- ered to put Detroit ahead. The A's bounced back briefly with a three run rally in the fourth. Wilson walked, Jim Fini- gan singled and Joe DeMaestri hit a two-run triple, then scored on Herbert's wild pitch. * * * SENATORS 3, ORIOLES 2 WASHINGTON (R)-Mickey Ver- non's single with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth inning scored Maury McDermott from third base to give Washington a 3-2 victory over Baltimore Thurs- day night. Gus Keriazakos, who pitched the ninth after Bob Porter- field pulled a back muscle, won his first major league game. INTRAMURAL SOFTBALL SCORES Psych. Rookie Jim Davis received credit for the victory, his sixth against two losses. Jim Hearn was the loser, his sixth against seven wins. DODGERS 8, REDLEGS 5 CINCINNATI (A) - Although he had to have help from Jim Hughes, VIC WERTZ belts two home runs Don Newcombe hurled his first pitching victory since June 23 Thursday as the Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the Cincinnati Redlegs 8-5. "I don't want it-somebody take it quick," the 220-pound funster said after bracketing a one-under- par 70 to his opening 66 over the par 71 Keller Club course. "They can have the low medal and the $250 that goes with it. This thing is a jinx. I'd rather sleep tonight." Oliver barely beat out Jackie Burke Jr. and Cary Middlecoff, a pair of playing partners from Kia- mesha Lake, N. Y., for the prize. Burke shot a 69 and M ddlecoff a 68 to wind up in a tie at 137. The red-hot gallery favorite, stiff-necked Sam Snead, squeaked into the championship bracket with a second straight 73 for 146-one stroke below the 147 cutoff point. Sam's putting was wretched. A hurricane releases 200 to 300 times as much energy as the early type of atomic bomb. B u r k e m o of Franklin.aMich., showed the boys he was still around by firing a four-under-par 67 for 141. -Burkemo was exempt from qualifying. The 67 was matched by Ted Kroll of New Hartford, N. Y. The best card of the day was turned in by Argentina's Roberto Devi- cenzo, who shot a 66 for 139. Burkemo heads a field of 74 sur- vivors who begin head - to - head match play battling Friday. Two 18-hole rounds are on the first day's program, followed by 36-hole matches d a i 1 y until Tuesday's f nal. Those failing to make the grade included two former champions, Chandler Harper of Chattanooga, 1950 winner, who had 148, and Vic Ghezzi of Inwood, N. Y., 1941 win- ner, who shot 150.
