QUARTETS, OPERA:
Summer Audiences To Air
Variety of Musical Events

A summer of chamber music isz
in store for concert-goers as more
than fifteen faculty recitals will
be presented by the School of
Music.
As in the past the series will
center around the three concerts
by the Stanley Quartet, which
will be given Tuesday evenings,
July 7, 21, and August 4.
Emil Raab, violinist, and Ben-
ning Dexter, pianist, will be
heard in a sonata recital on June
30, as will Robert Courte, violist,
and Lydia Courte, pianist, on July
13. John Kollen will give a piano
recital on July 14, and on July
28 Ava Comin Case and Mary
Fishburne will perform literature
for two pianos. The University
Woodwind Quintet will play on
July 20.
THERE WILL be three Sunday
afternoon organ recitals; on July
19 and August 2 by Robert Noeh-
ren, University organist, and on
July 26 by Robert Ellis, guest or-
ganist. As yet not scheduled are
concerts by the University Choir,
Symphony Orchestra, and. Sum-
mer Session Band, as well as nu-
merous student recitals. The sum-,
mer' opera presentation will be
Offenbach's "Tales, of Hoffman"

to be given in Lydia Mendelssohn
Theatre on August 6, 7, 8 and 10.!
All concerts will be in Rack-
ham Lecture Hall, with the ex-
ception of organ recitals and
orchestral, .c h o ral concerts,
which will be in Hill Auditor-
ium, and student recitals. Eve-
ning programs begin at 8:30,
afternoons at 4:15.
The first concert will be the re-
cital by Mr. Dexter and Mr. Raab
on June 30. Their program in-
cludes the Sonata in G major,
Opus 96, by Beethoven, Stravin-
sky's Duo Concertantes, and the!
Sonata in A major of Faure.
THE STANLEY QUARTET has
programmed three works of Beet-
hoven, two of Mozart, and one of
Haydn, along with their usual
generous helping of contemporary
music. The fourth quartet of Bela
Bartok and Darius Milhaud's
Quintet with Piano, recently re-
corded by the group on Contem-
porary Records, will be heard.
The summer's premiere will be
Ross Lee Finney's Quintet with
Piano (1953) with Marian Owen
as soloist. Mr. Finney is Profes-
sor of Composition and Composer
in Residence at the University.

Ann Arbor's dearth of usable
swimming facnizies will force
summer students hunting for a
deep tan to several lakes surround-
ing the city.
Five of the more popular stu-
dent beaches are Whitmore Lake,
out U.S. 23 nearly ten miles away;
Island Lake, east of Brighton;
and three lakes off N. Territorial
Rd.; Silver, Portage and Indepen-
dence Lakes.

Fund Okayed
Establishment of the Wendy
Owen Memorial Fund for re-
search and investigation on the
cause of aplastic anemia by Dr.
Frank H. Bethell of Simpson Me-
morial Institute was authorized
by the Regents at their June meet-
ing.
A total of almost five and a
half thousand dollars was accept-
ed for the fund, almost three
thousand raised by campus stu-
dent organizations. An additional
$2,500 came from Mrs. Kenneth
C. Lincoln.
The memorial honors Rosemary
Owen, a former Daily junior edi-
tor, who died one month after her
graduation in June, 1951.

rounded by the State-developed
Pickney Recreation Area, seems
to have caught the fancy of Ann
Arborites as one of the best
beaches around.
Reached by way of Huron St.
to Dexter Rd., a left turn at N.
Territorial Rd., Silver Lake al-
ready has played host to a num-
ber of budding Olympic swim-
mers over the sizzling weekend.
Only two of Ann Arbor's four
golf courses and the University
course are open to the public this
summer. The Municipal Golf
Course across the Huron River
and the Huron Hills Club east on
Huron River Dr. willgive plenty of
putting space to student golf fans.
* * *
THE UNIVERSITY Course is
located south of the stadium on
Stadium Blvd.
Largest picnic spot around cam-
pus is the Island Park, dislodg-
ing the Arboretum, fall and spring
favorite, in popularity. Tucked in
a bend of the Huron River, the
Island Park provides ample ball
field space for an all-day picnic,
near enough for all not taking ad-
vantage of the 'University summer
driving regulation.
For early-rising tennis play-
ers, Ann Arbor houses five sets
of courts. Palmer Field, behind
the women's dormitories on Ob-
servatory Hill; and Ferry Field,
near the stadium, are the Uni-
versity's courts while the city
has three parks open which
have tennis courts.
The entrance to Burns Park is
at 1320 Baldwin Ave. West Parktis
located on Capin St. between W.
Huron St. and Miller Ave. and
Allmendinger Park on Pauline
Blvd. in southwest Ann Arbor.
Grads May Attend
Record Sessions

In the intra-mural program this
summer team sports and individ-
ual games will be featured in tour-
naments. Volleyball, basketball,
badminton, handball and paddle
ball equipment will be available in
the Sports Bldg. On Ferry Field
students may play softball, pitch
horseshoes and play tennis.
As during the regular year, the
sports Bldg. will be open for coeds
from 7:30 to 10 p.m. every Friday
night beginning this week for co-
recreational games and sports.
The indoor swimming pool in
the Sports Bldg. will be available
for men students and faculty from
2 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through
Friday and from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Saturday.
Art Print Loan
ExhibitOpen
Students may choose art prints
from the Art Print Loan Collec-
tion from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today
through Thursday in the Rack-
ham Mezzanine Gallery.
The collection includes a cross
section of the works of the old
masters as well as many contem-
porary artists. Approximately 150
to the 900 available paintings are
on exhibition. Others may be re-
quested at 510 Administration
Bldg.
Two prints will be available for
each student. The second choice
should be made on Thursday or
Friday. Each print will cost fifty
cents for summer use.
Faculty members will be given
an opportunity to rent those pic-
tures which are not taken by stu-
dents.
Prints can be picked up from
June 29 to July 1 in 510 Admin.
Bldg.

Cisler Hails
Great Future
For Electricity
Walker L. Cisler, Detroit Edi-
son Company president, said yes-
terday that a "golden opportunity
exists' for the expansion of elec-
tric power systems.
Speaking first at a three-day
Area Development Institute spon-
sored by the business administra-
tion school and the power com-
pany, Cisler explained that "in the
four-year period from 1953 to 1956,j
there will be installed new gener-
ating units with a capability rat-
ing of 50 per cent of the present
entire capability of the United
States."
"There appears to be an ever-in-
creasing need for electric energy-
a need that doubles each decade,"
he declared.
Following Cisler, Leland Doan,
Dow Chemical Company presi-
dent, indicated that the chemical
industry "has by no means stopped
enlarging and that it will contin-
ue to require more power in pro-
portion to its expansion."
However, Doan cautioned that
new processes for producing pres-
ent chemicals may change the
over-all electrical power require-
ments of the chemical industry.
