WEDNESDAY, JULY 23, 1952 THE MICHIGAN DAILT Socialist Labor Party Wages Class Struggle mommmomm" PAGE SEVEN l.S By LEONARD GREENBAUM Daily Managing Editor 40,000 American voters going to the polls this November will cast their vote for a revolutionary party advocating the complete overthrow of the political state and capital- ism. However, the revolution of the Socialist Labor Party--if and when it comes-will be a peaceful one, by ballot as prescribed in the Conrstitution of the United States. * * * THE SOCIALIST Labor Party, founded in 1890 by Columbia Uni- versity Professor Daniel De Leon, insists that peaceful, law abiding, revolution is possible. In place of capitalism, the So- cialist Labor Party wants a society based on collective ownership of the land and all the instruments of production, with the manage- ment of industry completely in the hands of the workers. Until the revolution by ballot comes, the party mission is to agi- tate and educate and to keep the issues before the people so that when they decide they do want Socialism, they will be able to vote for it. * * * THE PARTY, which has been running candidates for president and vice president since 1892, will be active this year in more than half of the 48 states. Nominated for president is Eric Hass, a 47 year old Nebras- kan who edits the party's news- paper, The Weekly People. Vice presidential candidate is Stephen Emery of New Jersey. The 45 year old Emery; who works as a subway train dispatcher in New York City, was the veep candidate in 1948. In Michigan, the SLP will pre- sent a full, state ballot with candi- dates for United States Senator, Governor, Lt. Governor, Secretary * * * U operated" and accept capitalism as a finality. The SLP attacked the Taft- Hartley Law and claimed that the American worker is being reduced to the status of an unresisting in- dustrial serf. The SLP also condemns theo- cracy and militarism. Reforms or compromise are rul- ed out by the SLP, which holds that "every reform granted by decadent capitalism is a concealed measure of reaction." Despite its low following, the SLP carries on a full time infor- mation program through its week- ly paper and through the annual distribution of over two million pamphlets on current topics. Most of the party's standard literature was written by found- er De Leon whose centennial is being celebrated this year. But until it can celebrate the workingclassrevolution, the So- cialist Labor Party, which claims no affiliation with the Socialist Party, the Communist Party, the American Labor Party or any oth- er group, will continue its lonely but patient efforts. 1952-1953 UNIVERSITY MUSICAL SOCIETY CONCERTS SEASON TICKETS NOW ON SALE OVER THE COUNTER BURTON MEMORIAL TOWER Seventy-fourth Annual Choral Union Series RICHARD TUCKER, Tenor«.«. . . . . . The candidates will be chosen at the state conven- tion August 5th in Detroit. The SLP drew 1500 votes from Michigan and 40,000 from the en- tire nation in the 1948 election. IN ITS 1952 platform, adopted at the national convention, May 4, the SLP warned that capitalist rivalry for world trade is leading to World War III. All the ills of society, accord- ing to the SLP, can be traced to the class division of society un- der capitalism which breeds war, fascism, exploitation and pov- erty. The party platform called the Korean war senseless to all but the capitalists and the Russian imperialists. The Communists are as much an enemy of the SLP as the capital- ists. THEaSLP "repudiates the kind of bureaucratic despotism masque- rading as "Marxist" in Soviet Rus- sia, and the reform outfits such as the British Labor Party, falsely claiming to 'Socialist.'" British socialism, the SLP claims, is merely a scheme to save British capitalism. Also attacked in the party plat- form are the CIO and the AF of L, which, the SLP states, are "faker- Madeoiselle's ' I A .I A lf Many other exciting bargains including cocktail, tea, luncheon and dinner napkins.
