EsIX THE MICHIGAN DAILY WEDNESDAY, 3UNE 25, 1952 Robinson vs. Maxim; Davey To Tackle Vejar In Detroit 10-Rounder I ~ r I Match To Be On Television By HARRY STAPLER DETROIT -()- Chico Vejar's ever-circling feet and Chuck Da- vay's ever-cutting eyebrows will be the big question marks in their 10-round televised battle before a near sellout crowd at Olympia Stadium tonight. Vejar, who made a . defensive fight in losing a decision to Davey May 7, has changed his tactics. He plans to keep circling in on Davey from the right side. Davey is a southpaw with a devastating left jab. *. * * DAVEY suffered bad cuts on his eyebrows in his disputed draw with Carmen Basilio at Syracuse recently and often. before was chopped up above the eyes. It's a cinch that Vejar, New York University drama student, will aim for Davey's eyes. But Davey, undefeated grad- uate student from Michigan State making his first appear- ance as a headliner in his home city of Detroit, ranks as a 9 to 5 favorite. The fight will be telecast and broadcast nationally starting at 9 p.m.. A crowd of more 'than 15,000 was predicted by pro- moters. IN VEJAR'S workouts he con- centrated on speed and a press- ing technique - always pressing from the side that would keep him out of range of Davey's left hand. Vejar, who lost only twice in 42 fights, worked out exclusively against two lefthanders - KO Morgan of Detroit and Chuck Boucher of Manchester, N.Y. When preparing for his previous fight with Davey, he faced a southpaw in only a few work- outs. Davey floored him four times as Vejar tried to lay back and coun- ter punch. After that battle Davey met Basilio and was declared the loser on a split decision. But when the New York Boxing Commission learned that referee Joe Palmer had failed to score every round of the fight, the commission official- ly switched the verdict to a draw, the second in Davey's career. Davey's eyes were so badly cut that he was unable to appear for a scheduled May 11 fight with Vejar here. The cuts are com- pletely healed now. The Bosox dropped their eighth game in 12 starts on this road trip. Virgil Trucks hurled his first victory in a month and four days and his first complete game since his May 15 no-hitter. He gave up six hits and struck out seven in getting his third victory against eight defeats. GB 3 3% 4 5 9%/ 9% 17%/ Title at Stake In New York, NEW YORK-(W)-Joey Maxim and, Sugar Ray Robinson sweated it out in the gyms yesterday, awaiting today's once-postponed light heavyweight title bout at Yankee Stadium. As luck would have it, a warm sun, wilting humid New Yorkers, turned up 24 hours late. The weather man promised more of the same today, but he also fore cast scattered thundershowers late in the day. * * * SUGAR RAY, the middleweight champ, weighed 160 to Maxim's 174% Monday but they must weigh again today. Because Maxim must make 175 pounds or less and Robin- son has no weight problem, many feel the postponement will be more of a strain on the champ from Cleveland. He worked much harder than Rob- inson, boxed over 104 rounds, and traintd to hit a peak near the class limit Monday. The two-day wait is bound to have some effect. Up in Harlem where a large crown jammed around the en- trance to the uptown gym, await- ing his appearance, Robinson zip- ped through a light drill of sha- dow boxing, bag punching and rope skipping. He did no road work. ASKED IF HE thought the postponement handicapped either fighter, Robinson said, "It hurt& us both-we want to get it over with." Later he said weight making was bound to worry a fighter. He pointed to his own troubles in thi welter division. The 15-round bout, scheduled for 9:00 p.m. will not be carried on home television or radio in the United States. It will be beamed to some 39 theaters in 25 cities on a closed theater- TV circuit. As always in New York, the winner will be decided on a round- scoring basis with two judges and a referee voting. A supplementary point-scoring system with the winner of a round. getting from one to four points, will back up the round system. ti Ui NEW and USED B OOKS S UPPLIES for all schools SLATED'S your college bookstore i I SAVE AT SAM'S SHORT SLEEVE SPORT SHIRTS Sanforized z3 W 'm S J 519 * rayons * solid colors, plaids seersuckers z1 ti riJ * skip-dents I GRAY AND KHAKI PANTS - $2.99 SANFORIZED I 1. 11 It _ _ . _ . _ _ _ _ _ y., P MR 1ii I I I
