They accom- plished the feat, in their 14th at- tempt, by routing former team- mate Allie Reynolds in six innings to hammer out 9-4 victory over the league-leading N e w York Yankees. In salvaging the last of the three-game series, the third-place Indians moved back to within a game of the Yankees, who had their lead shaved to a scant two percentage points over Boston. * * * THE VICTORY tasted extra sweet to the Tribe since it came at the expense of Reynolds, who had beaten them four straight times. He shut them out three times and held them runless and hitless the last time he faced the Indians. Clutch-hitting specialist Clyde Vollmer lashed his third homer of the game over the chummy left field wall, a three run clout, to give the Boston Red Sox a 13-10 victory and Ellis Kinder his 17th straight pitching tri- umph over the Chicago White Sox. Vollmer, whose timely hitting has kept the Red Sox high in the American League pennant fight for the past three weeks; spotted his 17th, circuit blow of the sea- son against Harry Dorish to break a 10-10 deadlock in the sixth in- ning. * * * DETROIT JUMPED on relief pitcher Mickey Harris for three runs in the eighth inning and de- feated Washington 6-3. N e il Berry's two-run double was the big blow. Dizzy Trout, t h i r d Tiger moundsman, was the winning pitcher, his f o u r t h victory against 11 losses. Burly Don Newcombe pitched his ninth straight victory over the Chicago Cubs as the Brooklyn Dodgers pounded out a 9 to 1 tri- umph before 16,962 at Wrigley Field. * * * THE DODGERS' sixth straight victory was also the eighth in a row for Newcombe who has won 14 and lost four this season. Gil Hodges and Billy Cox paced Brooklyn's 12-hit attack with three apiece. Hodges' dou- ble in the fourth lacked inches of becoming his 31st homer. The Boston Braves withstood a ninth inning rally to defeat the Cincinnati Reds, 6 to 2 and move into fifth place in the National League. ** * VERN BICKFORD hurled bril- liantly until the ninth when the Reds scored their runs, and was lifted with two out and two on base. Bob Chipman finished. It was Bickford's 11th victory against seven defeats. Elwell Blackwell was the losing hurler-his 10th against nine victories. The Philadelphia Phils shut out the St. Louis Cardinals 7-0 before 9,881 fans behind the seven-hit ;itching of ex-Cardinal Ken John- son. Eddie Waitkus and Richie Ashburn led the Philadelphia of- fensive, each getting a double and two singles. The cellar-dwelling St. Louis Browns defeated the Philadelphia Athletics, 6 to 4, for the second straight victory, but lost the ser- vices of catcher Sherman Lollar for an indefinite time. Lollar was spiked by Eddie Joost who was trying to score in the A's half of the third. Two of the St. Louis runs came in the fifth when Lollar's successor, Matt Batts, homered with one on. Gustafson struck out 8 men as Sigma Chi took the game 2-0. The Royals had only one other chance to score, but threw the opportunity out the window when Lowell Emerling fell asleep on third base only to wake up and find Sigma Chi's thirdbaseman putting the old tag on him. BOB VANDENBERG spun a four-hitter in the faces of Cy's Boys to give the Hardrocks a 9-4 victory in the semi-finals. Neil Weller blasted a home-run to in- sure Vandenberg's win, who got two hits himself. In a consolation game Jack Greffling hit a grand-slam home-run in the last inning to give Allen Rumsey a 13-10 win over Education. Nick Radell pitched a seven hit- ter in the other consolation game as Phi Gamma Delta out-fought Phi Sigma Kappa, 10-7. The finals will be played Mon- day evening.
