"In Iraq, girls are like goods-
something to be bought and sold,"
according to Abbas Al-Khafaji, '53,
of Baghdad.
Al-Khafaji declared that the cus-
toms and the traditions of the two
countries are very different, es-
pecially the marriage customs.

"IN IRAQ," he explained, "the
father of the boy is usually the
instigator of the marriage process.
In fact, the agreement of both fa-
thers is absolutely necessary.
"Under this system, the male
1 aspirant doesn't himself solicit
the approval of the girl's father.
Instead he sends a delegation,
among whom is his father, to
her home.
"A confab ensues during which
the boy's traits-his character and
personality - are discussed.

"THE GIRL HERSELF is unable
to refuse the terms, if the two fa-
thers and the boy sanction the
marriage. Often the two spouses
are married without even having
seen each other prior to the cere-
mony."
Marriage in Iraq is based on
money, while in America, it's
ideally based on love, according
to Al-Khafaji. However, he has-
tened to qualify himself, ex-
plaining t h a t, unfortunately,
love was largely sexual in this
country.
"The divorce rate is actually
lower in Iraq than in the United
States," he added. He proposed

that the reason for the lower di-
vorce rate in Iraq was that virgin-
ity in the girl is of prime neces-
sity.
"If the wife is not an immacu-
late virgin, punishment of death
is the mope, whether she be the
daughter of king or peasant," he
explained. "It is not surprising
then that approximately 98% of
Iraq women remain virgins before
marriage."
