TedV Big League .Flag Scrap To Resume NEW YORK - (P)-The major leagues go back to work today after a two-day All-Star Game va- cation marred by injuries to Ted 'Williams and Joe DiMaggio. The Boston Red Sox slugger fractured his left elbow on the left-field wall catching Ralph Kin- er's drive in the first inning. An operation today for removal of a bone fragment may determine whether he will be lost for the re- mainder of the season. DiMaggio's injury, aggravation of a strained groin, was trivial by comparison. He is expected to play again in two or three days. * * * LOSS OF WILLIAMS dealt Bos- ton a hard blow. It came at the half-way mark in the pennant race, a point at which in 1949 the Red Sox, then 81agames behind, started a great drive that almost carried them to victory. Boston is now in fourth place 8 games behind the Detroit Ti- gers, but without Williams the Sox' chances to rally look migh- ty slim. The star outfielder crashed into the wall at Comiskey Park in the first inning, but kept on playing. The gravity of the accident did not become apparent until x-rays showed a fractured radius in Wil- liams' left arm. * * * THE FRONT-RUNNING Detroit Tigers, who took a 12-10 exhibition slugfest from Cincinnati last night, will face fifth-place Washington as the season gets underway again tonight. The American League has an- other shining night attraction: the DiMaggio - less Yankees against third-place Cleveland in Yankee Stadium. Giants Sell KirbyHigrbe NEW YORK-(A"'-Kirby Higbe, veteran right-handed pitcher with the New York Giants, was sold to- day to the Minneapolis club of the American Association. Higbe, a 10-year man, agreed to join the Giant farm club, which currently is leading the race in the Association. During his stay in the big leagues he won 118 games and lost 98. By The Associated Press George (Sugar) Costner scored the fistic upset of the year last night by thrashing lightweight champion Ike Williams to gain an unanimous 10-round decision in a non-title scrap before an estimated 7,500 at Philadelphia's Shibe Park. But middleweight champion Jake LaMotta successfully defended his title by scoring a decisive, unani- mous 15-round decision over Ti- berio Mitri of Italy in Madison Square Garden. Costner hit Williams with every- thing but the ringposts, but was unable to floor the plucky 135- pound king. Williams, rated along with welterweight King Ray (Su- gar) Robinson as the two best fighters-pound for pound-in the ring today, never had a chance after the hard punching Costner COLLEGIATE HAIR STYLES Specializing in " crew cuts " short cuts " personality styles - 7 hair cutters - THE DASCOLA BARBERS Liberty off State I,;$. clipped him with a vicious left hook in the third round. There were no knockdowns in the fiercely-fought LaMotta-Mitri battle. The fans roared through most of the fight as the fighters time and again mixed it up in thrilling exchanges.
