Gen- To Build Soo Air Defenses OTTAWA- 0P?)-Defense Minis- ter Brooke Claxton indicated yes- terday the anti-aircraft defenses around the vital Sault Ste. Marie canal locks are being strengthen- ed, but said this action has no re- lationship to Korea. He told a news conference that as part of a general build-up of reserve forces decided upon before Korea, perhaps "we will soon be issuing further anti-aircraft guns to the reserve force units in the Soo." Claxton said training Hof key personnel in certain fields con- nected with civil defense is to. be started soon when opportunities will be provided for the training of civilians in certain armed services schools. He said those civilians would be mostly Federal and Provincial health officials and fire marshals. eral Motors advertised their mo- dels as "less than the conver- tible with the folding top," or "only one dollar more than the four-door standard model." Lowest-priced model for the hard-topped convertible is Chev- rolet's Bel-Air. Prices go from there to the high altitudes of Ca- dillac, Chrysler and the Cosmo- politan. The detachment formed part of a 2,000 man force which has huntedGiuliano sincethe Italian government formally de- clared war on the bandit 10 months ago. A police spokesman said Giu- liano was hit by at least 12 ma- chine gun bullets in the battle. Two or three members of Giuli- ano's gang, with him when the police closed in, escaped in the darkness. * * : THE END CAME as a disap- pointment to many Italians, who regarded the bandit king as a Ro- bin Hood because of the way he shared the loot of his robberies and kidnappings with the peasant poor. Giuliano was born in Montele- pre, Sicily, Nov. 16, 1922, only a month after his parents returned to their native land from New York City. His first murder was that of a policeman who tried to arrest him for black marketing, in 1943. He fled to the Sicilian hills, joined other desperados and started a career of banditry which included the killing of nearly 100 policemen and scores of other crimes.
