Bandleader Lombardo roared to a first heat victory averaging 81.203 miles per hour over the five-mile course, to set an Amer- ican record for Gold Cup craft. Close behind was the speeding Such Crust, which averaged 79.063 miles an hour to slip under the old record, too. Arena's over-all victory, how- ever, was achieved by winning the third and final heat when Lombardo's aging craft devel- oped fuel line trouble and drift- ed in the center of Gull Lake while the rest of the boats sped by. The previous record of 77.911 was set in Detroit in 1946 by the same Arena, piloting Miss Golden Gate. It was Trucks' seventh win of the season against five defeats and the fifth in his total of 16 starts against the Red Sox. The Tigers made all 12 of their hits against Ellis Kinder before he was relieved by Tex Hughson in - ___ * * * i the ninth. The latter, back after nursing his ailing arm in Austin, Tex., for many weeks, set the Ti- gers down in order in the finale. Trucks gave only two hits up to the ninth, when the Red Sox filled the bases with two out on singles by Junior Stephens and Bill Good- man and a base on balls to Bobby Doerr. The veteran Wally Moses ended matters, however, by pop- ping out. The Tigers scored in the second on singles by Hoot Evers, Pat Mullin, George Vico's sacrifice and Bob Swift's long fly to center. The Red Sox pulled into a 1-1 tie after filling the bases in the fourth. Dom DiMaggio hit safely and, after Johnny Pesky and Stephens walked, scored on a Doerr fly. Dick Wakefild's two-bagger off the left-center wall and Vico's single to right gave the Tigers a second run in the sixth. This maintained his five-stroke advantage over colorful Jimmy Pemaret, of Ojai, Calif., who also kept a sub-par pace over rain-softened fairways.
