EDUCATION MEET: Mitchell Cites Skills, Values As Physical Education Goals Physical education should give the student skills and apprecia- tions that will last him all his life rather than be "exercise for the sake of exercise," Prof. Elmer D. Mitchell, of the physical ed- ucation department, said yester- day. Speaking before an education school assembly, Prof. Mitchell ;aid, "in University courses, more academic content is beinginld ed in physical education classes to give an appreciation of health, safety and sports in one's per - sonal life and in ourAmerican culture." He suggested that forestry stu- dents could use instruction in life saving and outdoor sports, that journalism students intending to be sports writers should have a personal knowledge of many sports, and that architecture stu- Alice Russell Named to Post Appointed Alumnae Council Secretary Miss Alice Russell, of Ann Ar- bor, has been named executive secretary of the Alumnae Coun- cil of the University Alumni Asso- ciation, Clair B. Hughes, alumni president, announced. The Appointment was made by the Association's executive com- mittee. Miss Russell will succeed Mrs. Lucille B. Conger, who held the post for the past 15 years. Mrs. Conger will retire Sept. 1. Miss Rissell's appointment is effective Aug. . A graduate of the University in 1924, Miss Russell took her M.A. here in 1927. She has taught in Michigan high schools and has been on the faculty of the Univer- sity of Wisconsin. During her student years, .he was a member of Collegiate Soro- sis and Delta Kappa Gamma, hon- orary education fraternity. Mrs. Conger became executive secretary of the Alumnae Coun- cil during the depression years when many of the organized clubs were inactive. Through her lead- ership, many of them were re- vived and new ones organized. Soop Named Associate Extension Service Chief E. J. Soop has been appointed director of the University Exten- sion Service, Dr. Charles A. Fish- er, director of the Extension Serv- tce, has announced. Soop joined the Extension Serv- ice in 1935 as field secretary and opened the Detroit office. He was appointed assistant director in 1941.
