WEDNESDAY) SUiLY 16, 1941, - THE MICHIGAN DAILY . . f _.. a aa f sJ ZZfAW 'M' Net Coach Captures State Closed Crown Wasting as little time as pos- sible, Michigan's tennis coach, ' Robert Dixon, breezed through his finalist opponent, John Shing- leton of East Lansing, 6-0, 6-4, 6-0, to cop the Michigan Closed Tennis Championship for the second consecutive year Sunday in Flint. In eliminating Kimbark Peter- 1 son, Michigan's other faculty member in the tourney, Dixon ran up against his stiffest competi-l tion, finally squeezing out a 6-4, 7-5 victory in the quarter-finals, thus keeping his slate clean. This makes two years of tournament lay in Flint without the loss of a r single set by the southpaw titlist. Fresh from winning the Upper Peninsula net crown, Bill Mikul- Vich, Wolverine tennis captain for. the past semester, easily moved into the second round of the Michigan State Open Tennis Championships. He met and oust- ed Alex Martin of Grand Rapids,l 6-0, 6-4, on Monday at the clay courts of Kent Country Club in Grand Rapids.f I-M SPOUTFOLIO r, r' Jerome Weiler, who blasted outI a 73 over the University golf course last Thursday to lead early finishers in the I-M summer golf tournament, saw his one-over-par figures withstand the week-end efforts of 31 opponents to give him medal honors in the tourney.' Weiler's 37-36 was good enough to give him a two stroke margin over his nearest rival, L. H. Haus- er. Hauser fired a respectable 75 to edge Chuck Menninger for the place position. *ith medal play behind .them, the 32 contestants have been divided into four flights according to their first round scores, and now will battle it out on a match play basis. Each flight winner will receive an in- dividual award, and if time per- mits, the four group leaders will meet for the all-campus links crown. * * * Bill Culver yesterday stamped himself as a heavy favorite in the I-M net tourney by becoming the first man to advance to the quar- ter finals. He accomplished this feat by turning back Tom Mc- Donald in a bitterly contested match, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Culver teamed with Emery Freeman to blitz into the semi- finals of doubles competition byI trouncing McDonald and Johnj Van Aiken, 6-4, 6-2. The I-M softball season swungI into its second week of play Monday night as ten teams tangled at South Ferry Field. In the fraternity league Psi Upsilon advanced into a first place tie by smothering the Phi Delts, 14-2; Sigma Chi lashed the Delts, 10-5; and Sig- ma Nu nipped Theta Xi, 4-2. In the Ind.ependent loop, Never- sweats jumped on Public Health, 11-2; Hell Hounds slap- ped Foulballs, 10-3; and Hard- rocks edged West Lodge, 9-8. Yesterday, the scores were: Residence Hall League: Michigan 6, Wenley 4; Lloyd 2, Williams 1; Fletcher 6, Winchell 2; Chicago 4, Allen-Rumsey 3. Independent League: Veterans 10, Engl. Lang. Inst. 5; Law Club 2, U. Hospital 0; Havenites 7, Robert Owen 0.
