JULY 30, 194' THE MICHIGAN. DAILY , _. ,, _ MAJOR LEAGUE RESULTS: Junior Circuit Play Highlighted By Three High-Scoring Games By HALE CHAMPION From Associated Press Summaries Real slugging duels of the type that has been strangely absent from the American League this season broke. out yesterday as if to make up for lost time. Number one on the list was the ten-inning struggle at Cleveland where the Indians squeezed out a 7-6 win on Stormy Weatherly's drive with the bases loaded. It brought the Indians within a game of second place. St. Louis whose rapid climb for a while threatened to sweep the Brownies into second place seems to have subsided somewhat, and the seventh-place Senators took their second straight from the ex-ram- pagers, 11-10. Final proof that the 1942 ball is not as dead as some hitters claim was the 12-7 victory of the Detroit Tigers over the Philadelphia Ath- letics. When the weak-sticking Tigers get 13 hits the ball isn't dead. Mungo Returns To Breeze 'Em Past Old Mates By The Associated Press NEW YORK, July 29-Since it is no trade secret that the Giants and Dodgers wish each other nothing more than afew broken bones at best, it comes as somewhat of a sur- prise to learn that the New Yorkers are about to cash in on a pitching arm which their old Flatbush feuding pardners paid plenty to repair. This soupbone is hung on the right shoulder of Van Lingle Mungo, the bad man from South Carolina. It has been the pride and joy of Page- land for years. Now the Giants have dusted it off and brought it back to the Big Leagues from Minneapolis in the hope there's enough lefttof the old fireball to put them in the National League pennant parade down the stretch. At Minneapolis, Van Lingle won a neat total of 11 games in a manner} which even led sweet William Terry. who never was one of the bad man's sincerest boosters, to suggest he might prove'a cure-all to the Giant's ailing elbow staff. Manager Mel Ott put him in to pitch the first half of today's twin bill with the Cubs, and the hero of the battle of Havana still showed considerable "swift" on his fast one and a slow curve that the batters definitely did not prescribe for their hitting averages. Although Mungo was beaten, it wasn't his fault as much as the leaks in the fielding behind him and a practically invisible batting attack onr the part of his mates. He gave upE seven hits in seven innings and fan- ned four, including two third strikes that he curved right by the suppos- edly dangerous Clyde McCullough. Byron Nelson (left) proved his right to consideration as one of golf's great medal players last week-end as he put together four great rounds to take his second consecutive Tam O'Shanter Open crown. Carding a 67 in a playoff with Clayton Heafner (right), he won $2,500 first prize money and took his place along with Ben Hogan as golf's most consistent player. Major Leagrue Standings F & C Students Fight Blazing Fire 21 Hours Special to The Daily CAMP FILBERT ROTH, July 25- Marking the first occasion in several seasons that our camp has been called upon for all available manpower- -the following account is given by Eugene Evancoe: "On Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. July 11. the Forest Ser- vice truck came rushing into camnp. siren going full blast. Most of the fellows were getting slicked up for the evening. It only took a few minutes and they were on the equipment- loaded truck, bound for the forest fire. "Where the fire wash nobody knew but in an hour Michigan Foresters were constructing fire lines, using water tanks, shovels, water hoses. Ne were the first crew to start fight- tug and a big job was at hand. after a while we found that our 1o4ation was near Kenton and the fire was on property of a private timber owner. "Men began pouring into the fire location in trucks from all sies. The fire was spreading fast. Some men came from as far as 65 miles, in- cluding Ironwood, and numbered about 300 before many hours were past. All night we worked steadily, gaining control of the blaze early the next morning. Altogether our gang spent 21 hours at the fire. Forest Service officers in charge of the fire commended the boys for their cooperation in bringing the fire under control.
