SATURDAY, AUGUST 1:0, 1940 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE ELEVEN Michigan Men Create College Clothes Styles Ann Arbor Called Fashion Center Of State; 2,000 FreshmanBring Styles By ALBERT P. BLAUSTEIN Ann Arbor has rightly been termed by many noted designers and cloth- iers as the "fashion center of Michi- gan." Here we find a large number of students, for the most part par- ticular about their dress, who set the pace for numerous style standards throughout the state. Each year into this city pour more than 2,000 freshmen from all over the country bringing with them a vast assortment of styles ranging from that of the "rah-rah" to that of, the staid conservative. When they reach the Univeristy, however, they learn about the style followed by the undergraduate and graduate here and most of them duplicate it. The style by the way is not a limiting one which stifles the individual per- sonality but rather one which keeps the individual within the extremes and saves him from the criticism of others in respect to dress. 'Joe College' Is Through The days of "Joe College" are over and unfortunate are those freshmen who fail to realize that fact. No long- er do students wear purple shirts with green trousers on the campus as this type of costume, according to most, went out with the Wall Street crash. But is must be remembered that a, dark, drape-modeled suit ac- companying a white shirt and black tie is also not wanted. When new comers arrive at Michi- gan they will be given the opportun- ity to observe on all sides what the mid-west college man wears. No doubt, if he's from the east, he'll find them less fashy than those worn at Princeton and possibly, if he's from the praire states, he'll find them less staid. Clothes here, as in every other place vary with the year and the new fall fashions will a"ect Ann Arbor as well as New York and Hollywood. What should be avoided, however, in an attempt to keep up with "the latest," is going to the extremes for few, if any of us, wear all of the newest models. 'Loud' Clothes In 'the way of "loud" clothes it is only fair to mention the fact that all pants (shorts are not being con- sidered) do not have to be worn be- low the ankles-but they do have to be below the knees. The shirts may be of various "noticeable" colors but they also must not be too different, all the colors of the rainbow do not mix well on one shirt. There was an old song once in whichrsome college man told the world what he has learned in an in- stitution of higher education. It seem- ed that one of the habits he acquired was "goin' around without a hat"- a habit which many feel is charac- teristic of most boys at school. That is not quite true in Ann Arbor for, although a good many students go without hats, an equally large number wear them. Hats this fall will be broader brimmed than those of the past, most of them having a brim from two and one-fourth to two and five-eighths inches wide. Men's headgear will be mostly in the browns and greens with or without a contrasting band. Suits Carefully Chosen Suits must be carefully chosen so that they will neither look to "young- ish" nor give the college men the air of a middle-aged person. Tweeds will be worn a great deal especially in Shetland colors and thin chalk stripes will be fashionable in the more con- servative models. Both the reversible and conver- tible topcoat are sure to be very popu- lar this year, as they combine utility and looks. The former usually has one side made of some material to protect the suit during rain while the latter has a removable lining enab- ling it to be used as a topcoat in the fall and an overcoat in the winter. As usual the oxford shirts will be the most fashionable for everyday wear with the wide-spread collar re- placing the button down collar for the most part. For Footwear For footwear men will want the Scotch grain brogues for classes and perhaps two or three other pairs of brown or black shoes for dates and. special occasions. Moccasins have be- come increasing important for the campus during the past year with the decline of- saddle shoes. Socks, contrary to popular belief, are worn with garters by most males at school and this fall the most fash- ionable will be the soft colored shet- land type;of various solid colors. The fault of too many freshmen is that they have preconceived no- tions of how a college student dress- es and clothes himself accordingly.
