Ten Courses Plus Tournament Make District 'Golfer's Dream', Tennis Players May Enter Two Tourneys Here Tennis fans enrolled in the Sum- mer Session will battle for the cam- pus championship July 11 when the Intramural Sports Department opens its annual summer tennis tourna- ment. Entrants will vie for ribbons sig- nifying. singles and doubles cham- pionships on the 34 clay and con- crete courts at Ferry Field, avail- able for play all summer. Raquets and balls must be fur- nishod by individual players, each entrant being required to provide two new balls for the first match. Last years winners were J. F. Thompson in singles and Thompson and Al Orian in doubles. Municipal Courts Available The Ferry Field courts, as well as the 12 municipal courts in Burns and West parks, are open for play at all hours during fair weather. On. rainy days four indoor courts are available in the main gymnasium of the Intramural Building. No reservations, are issued for courts during the summer months. Novice Tourney Planned Both men and women Summer Session students are eligible to com- pete in the Ann Arbor Novice Tennis Tournament being' sponsored in the early part of July by the Ann Arbor News. The tournament is for novice play- ers residing in the county who are residents of Michigan. The require- ments are that entrants must not have won a college letter, major championship, city championship or major tournament in tennis. All entrants must be inhabitants of Michigan and must be residing in the county this summer. Entries for the tournament will close Monday, July 3, and the first round will be played starting Thurs- day, July 6. No entry fees are 're- quired, although players are asked to furnish new balls for the matches. Entry blanks are available either from the Ann Arbor News or at the Moe Sports Shop opposite the cam- pus. The champion and runner-up will meet champions from similar tourna- Teams To Vie For Intramural Baseball Title Each Group To Play Twice A Week; 'World Series, Will DecideChampions From 8 to 16 teams are expected to battle it out twice a week on South Ferry Field this summer for the mythical softball championship of tl e Summer Session. Teams will be entered in leagues, with league winners to meet in a "world's series" at the end of the summer. All men students are eli- gible for the games and may either enter their own teams or may sign up to be placed on teams to be or- ganized by the Intramural depart- ment. A meeting to organize the teams and the leagues will be held at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, June 29. All managers must enter their teams by then, and allunattached players will be assigned to teams at that time. Games will be played at 4:15 p.m. twice a week on South Ferry Field. Schedules will be sent out to team managers, who are encouraged to check and make sure that their op- ponents know of the games. Equip- ment can be obtained from the lock- er room office in the Intramural Building at no charge. Last year's winners included the "Profs" in the American League, the "Tigers" in the National League, and the "Has Beens" in the International League. R. Bandlow, W. Frost and D. An All-around Champion will be crowned on the basis of all the events, and individual champions and runners-up will be determined for the separate competitions. Events will be held at 4:30 p.m. Mondays Klonskl in the top flight and Clar- ence Nauhas in the lower. The University Golf Course, con- structed in 1930, boasts one of the finest lay-outs in the nation. Stu- dents and faculty enrolled in the Summer Session may follow the ball over its 18 rolling fairways for 50 cents per round-a fee far below maintainance costs. Nearby public links also include the Washtenaw Country Club, a state championship course; Loch Al- pine, the municipal course, and Sta- dium Hills. Private clubs include Barton Hills Country Club, Huron Hills Country Club and the Ann Ar- bor Golf and Outing Club. Inverness and Lakelands, outlying courses, offer diversion to those who seek to combine golf with picnics and outings. Players and neophytes who wish to polish up their strokes in private may practice on the indoor ranges in the basement of the Intramural Sports Building .or in the fields ad- joining the football stadium. and Wednesdays for five weeks at the Intramural Pool, with one event completed each day. Competition will be held in the 25- yard free style race; the 25-yard back stroke; 256.yard breast stroke; 50-yard free style; 50-yard back stroke; 50-yard breast stroke; 100- yard ;free style; 75-yard medley re- lay; the plunge for distance; and diving. Entries may be made in any or all of the events. The Intramural Pool will be open for informal swimming from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon and from 3 to 6 p.m. every day except Sundays and holidays.
