In 1934 the Rev. H. L. Pickerill rented a room in the basement of his home on Maynard Street to Eldon Hanm, who was working his way through school. By the end of the year three men were living together in the' basement and sharing the task of keeping order. In the next year a shower and gas range were in- stalled, and eight men joined to- gether. In the next year, 1936, these eight formed the nucleus for a cooperative house, and with the aid of a loan from the minister succeeded in estab- lishing themesleves on Thompson Street. In 1937 the group moved to the present Rochdale Cooperative House on Oxford Road, and, in the same fall a Girls' Cooperative House was established on Ann Street. The cooperative movement was established firmly, and it took just a short while for it to expand. Ten men continued to live in Dr. Picker- ill's cooperative basement, with study desks, ample plumbing faculties, a small and compact kitchen and a din- ing room seating 14. Last fall an- other group of cooperators formed the Robert Owen cooperative House at 922 S. State Street, and Congress, independent men's organization, or- ganized a house in the second sem- ester. A sixth house is the Socialist House. Membership fee for Rochdale, Rob- ert Owen and Congress houses is ten dollars. Each boy pays five dol- lars per week for board and room in addition to working "cooperative- ly" for a maximum of seven hours a 1940 Track Leader Coach Doherty To Take Over Track Squads Falls Heir To Big Ten Title Holders; Replaces Hoyt, Yale's New Head Coach (Continued from Page 13) left by the graduation of Michigan's great captain. Hook missed second place in the Big Ten shot put last year by only one inch, and Ostroot has pushed the iron ball out some 45 feet with ease. In the discus Ostroot has bettered Watson's freshman record by more than eight feet. Other new power from the fresh- man squad will be concentrated large- ly in the other events. Two fine pole vaulters will join up with Dave Cush- ing and August Fabyan to provide one of the finest vaulting corps in Wolverine history. Chuck Decker vaulted well over 13 feet while in high school and may be the number one vaulter next year. Wayne Mac- Master will push his teammate to the limit. Long-striding Bill Ackerman will be a familiar figure this year in the 'distance events. He has been run- ning the mile in about 4:25 and the two-mile in 9:45 with very little competition. He will team up well with Capt. Ralph Schwarzkopf. In the sprints Doherty will have Bud Piel, Don Jones, Al Thomas, Ed Cheney, Jim McGhee and Bob Fow- ler. Thomas and Piel have run the 100-yard dash in 9.9. Membership in the houses is obtained after interview with the committees on admission and vote by the entire membership of the house. Each house has its own elected offi- cials, but they cooperate in many- activities.
