In The News...
Oddities in the news that came
over the AP wire last Monday night:
"New Haven- Referee Gene Tunney
gave George Fitch, New Haven Negro
light heavyweight, a 10-round de-
cision over Steve Carr of Meriden to-
night, and talked to the crowd of 4,-
500 fansdfor two minutes explaining
why he did it.
The former world's heavyweight
champion said he would like to call
the bout a draw but that Connecticut
boxing rules forced him to be gov-
erned by his round by round point
scoring which gave Fitch a 44 to 34
edge.
' I know as much about boxing
as anyone here and if anybody
disagrees I will challenge him,"
Tunney said.
Heavy verbiage at 60 paces would
probably be the weapons-with the
Encyclopedia Brittanica and Shake-
Tennis associations of both
cities went ahead selling tickets
for the match and issuing angry
statements over which was en-
titled to it. There were refusals to
arbitrate.
Belgrade even went to the expense
of building additional seats around its
courts, naming them 'Budge Stand'
in honor of the sorrel-topped Ameri-
can.
Zagreb newspapers blazoned defi-
antly:
"Croatia produces players, so
we'll have the match."
Well the upshot of it was that the
Americans will play in Belgrade on
Tuesday and Wednesday and then
shift to Zagreb on Thursday.
This may seem rather silly but from
a little incident like this in good old
Serbia came the World War. Well,
don't forget we warned you.
