Southern Club A / / I / I 1 Watermelon, roastin' ears, and other Southern specialties were fea- tured at the annual picnic of the Southern Club of summer session students, held Monday night at Port- age Lake. With a membership made up of students from Southern states who attend summer classes at the Univer- sity, the Club has increased in popu- larity each year until now it has a large membership and effective work- ing organization. It was this group which was primarily responsible for the Southern dance held last Satur- day at the League. The picnic, an annual affair, was under the direction of B. L. Smith, of Statesboro, Ga., retiring president of the club. Th'e more than 60 Southern "gentlemen and gals" who attended took an active part in the burlesque athletic games which provided enter- tainment and in the more' serious business of perfecting the organiza- tion for the coming year. Prof. Jack- son R. Sharman, of the department of physical education was responsible for actively leading the students in the games provided. Officers elected to head the South- ern Club for next year include: C. T. Hughes, Richmond, Ky., president; S. L. Robinson, Clinton, Miss., vice- president; and.-Bertha Ashby, Nor- man, Okla., secretary-treasurer. Charles Thomas Takes Still Another Pool Event Charles Thomas won his sixth race in the Summer Session series yester- day by taking the 100-yard back- stroke swimming contest in the In- tramural Pool. His time was 63.1 sec- onds. Robert Beal was second and Robert Runo, third. Tomorrow a medley race, 25 yards of breaststroke, backstroke and, free style will be held, according to an announcement. Jurors refused to accept fees in two trials in a Watsonville, Calif., court and waived traveling expenses in order to cut public expenses. i A I I' Last Mixed Swim To Be Held Tonight The last mixed swim of the sum- mer, sponsored by the Recreational Swim Club, will be held this evening at the Intramural pool, it was an- nounced yesterday by officials. All members of the club and any others wishing, to take part may obtain complete information by calling at the office of Miss Ethel McCormick, social director of women, in the League. Miss McCormick said it is impera- tive that all who intend to take part in the swim sign up at the League if they have not done so in the past for one of the other parties.
