Voice Student Of University Wins Plaudits Miss Dorothea Torbeson Landed for Her Singing By Cadillac Paper Ann Arbor music lovers will be in- terested in the following article which recently appeared in the Cad- illac Evening News concerning Miss Dorothea Torbeson, a student of James Hamilton of the voice faculty of the School of Music, who gradu- ated last June. "For a young artist fresh from her University training Miss Dorothea Torbeson in her first recital here Sunday evening gave a performance worthy of a seasoned professional. "It was a splendid performance to give before any audience but the more so before her own home town people who oftentimes can be the most severe of critics. "From the beginning of her ambi- tious program which included two difficult arias and two of the always difficult Strauss numbers as well as several of the more modern things Miss Torbeson sang with the ease and assurance that promises a bright future. "Her rendition was splendid and the nicest thing about her voice it was said today is its resonant pianis- simo. She sings accurately, her tone quality is lovely and the whole range is even. Her program began with the soft aria 'Caro Nome' from Rigoletto (Verdi) which was sung with a fine understanding. She concluded her varied recital with a group of English songs among which was "The Great Awakenirg" by the modern com- poser Kramer. Besides the scheduled numbers Miss Torbeson was very generous with the following encores: 'The Little Damosel,' 'A Dream' and 'Little Star.' She was fortunate in having as her accompanist, Mrs. Eleanor B. Wil- liams, who has demonstrated her ability on former occasions. The con- cert was given in the First Congre- gational church." Taber of Columbus, O., national master of the Grange, believes there are "weeds" which are a greater menace to the farmer than those growing in his fields. These "weeds," he told about 250 members of the Middle Atlantic Grange Lectures' association, are high taxes, roundabout system of marketing and expensive marketing methods. "The farmer received less of what the consumer paid in 1931 than ever before," he said. "Our speculative marketing methods have developed into the most expensive 'weed' af- fecting modern agriculture."
