Mine Rescue Crew Aids Removal
of 16-Year-Old Youth From
Caved-in Well.
OTTAWA, Ill., June 29.-(A)-
Conscious and smiling, 16-year-old
Howard Smith was rescued unin-
jured Sunday from a caved-in well
in which he was in prisoned for 22
hours. He was uninjured. He was
trapped last Saturday while repair-
ing a pump on a farm near Wedion
owned by his grandfather, Frank
Debolt, and his uncle, Frank W.
Rabe.
Young Smith was brought to the
surface by a rope passed to him by
W. Spence Kellogg of Seneca, Ill.,
after a state mine rescue crew and
volunteers had dug a lateral to him.
only to find that they had to
abandon their efforts to enlarge
the hole because of the dangerous
!position of the rocks. They set up a
framework around him, however,
passed him food and then went to
the surface to begin digging out
the well itself.
Much of the rescue work was
done by Howard's 20-year-old
brother, Floyd. He pushed away a
large boulder pressing against his
brother's side after several rescu-
ers had failed to move it. Howard
complained of tenderness in his
shoulder due to the pressure of a
boulder, but physicians failed to
find any mark, and said he had
withstood the ordeal remarkably
well. He was put to bed to ward
off the possibility of pneumonia.
"Gee, it's good to be out," How-
ard told a crowd of several hun-
dred persons who had gathered to
watch the rescue work.
