SUNDAYS CONTINUOUS FROM 7:30 P. M. One morning last week an ap- parently brand new 5-passenger, 6- cylinder sedan of a well-known make came dramatically through the basement wail of the East Physics building of the University under the impetus of ropes and pulleys in the hands of perspiring workmen. Almost four years earlier to a day the same car had entered the laboratories in the basement of this building, in the same unusual fashion. The speedometer of the. car reached something over 18,000 miles, yet the wheels had never travelled an inch on the road: those 18,000 miles had been travel- led only in the interest of science. For four years this car, supported by an especially constructed frame- work and rollers, bristling with sound-measuring devices m a d e solely for the purpose, and stand- ing in the center of a perfect net- work of wires, has been used by the scientists of the University in ex- periments seeking to measure the noises made by the differential and transmission gears of a car and to trace the paths by which these' sounds reach the ears of the car's occupants. At the end of the experimentsI the men who have been carrying them out claim no wonders. They, have not succeeded in making a noiseless car not do they believe that one will appear in the near future, but through their labors they have devised electrically-oper- ated sound-measuring instruments which are now being employed suc- cessfully in the factories of the two well-known manufacturers of gears in whose interests the experiments were carried out. But while these researches have not wrought any miracles, they have brought to light any amount of interesting data in regard to the sounds made by the moving parts of a car, and the fashion in which these sounds manifest themselves. In charge of the work which has been done in the laboratories in the Department of Physics, through the Department of Engineering Re- search, were Professor Floyd A. Firestone, E. J. Abbott, Dr. H. B. Vincent, and R. V. Zumstein. The first three men are still members of the faculty, Mr. Zumstein having gone in the meanwhile to Ohio State University.
