WAS ORCHESTRA SOLOIST Announcement has been made of the engagement of Joseph Brink- man as a member of the University School of Music piano faculty be- ginning with the University year in September. Mr. Brinkman is a young American pianist who has won wide recognition through his numerous concert appearances and as an orchestra soloist. Mr. Brinkman was born in Du- buque, Iowa and received most of his musical education in Chicago which has been his home for a number of years. He made his de- but there as soloist with the Chi- cago Symphony Orchestra in 1924. He has appeared with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra several times under the baton of Frederick Stock., He is also noted as a composer of extraordinary ability. Among his compositions is a Minuetto in an attractive and effective modern treatment of the old dance from which as a piano piece possesses beauty of distinctive type. His brilliant success in concert and orchestral appearances have given added authority and interest to his musical opinions and teach- ing principles. His keen analysis of technical and musical problems have won for him a position of the first rank in the field of instruc- tion. His first teacher was Adolf Kleine and he later studied under Scion- ti, Levy and Adolf Weidig, and more recently has coached under Lee Pattison. For a number of years he was a member of the piano fac- ulty of the American Conservatory Chicago, but for the past several years, on account of his extended playing, he has maintained a pri- vate studio. His professional de- but took place with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra December 5 and 6, 1924 when he played the Liszt-Hungarian Fantasy. Since that time he has appeared as so- loist with the same organization many times and has been associat- IC-,AN C Screen Reflections MR. McLAGLEN, THE BIG PANSY At the Wuerth theatre: Victor Mc- Laglen in "On the Level" with Fifi d'Orsay and Lilyan Tashman. Also the following short subjects: Fox Movietone News; "Mickey's Sur- prise"; and "The Dancing Bear." Lilyan Tashman easily runs away: with "On the Level," which sup- posedly features Victor McLaglen and Fifi d'Orsay. It's not much of a picture, but she captures what there is of it, playing the most in- teresting adventuress role that this jaded department has yet encount- ered. The plot is not unusual; the act- ing is mediocre. Victor McLaglen puts over his, Lithuanian desires in a big way. We have never liked his type of work, although this is an improve- ment. You may safely take Little Willie to see it. We rate "On the Level" at a D;. admitting, however, that it is purely a matter of per- sonal taste. P. M. ed with Jacques Gordon in en- semble work. Mr. Brinkman's engagement as a member of the piano staff of the School of Music, brings the number of distinguished newcomers to that faculty up to four, the others be- ing Professor Wassily Besekirsky, violin, Professor Arthur Hackett, voice, and Assistant Professor Lau- ra Littlefield, voice. _Inu1111111 Ililn nilu111111111111111 111111111 III l: Among the Best and at Reasonable Prices' FREEMAN'S I DINING ROOM Clean, cool and with excellent service.
