Thomas Diamond I George Westling, rookie Tiger shortstop, is fast learning the ropes and is rapidly becoming ac- climated to his new surroundings in big league baseball. Bucky Har- ris has had difficulty in bottling up the shortfield position and was forced to bench Heine Schuble, a valuable man at the plate, in the search for a man with mire abilityj afield. With the benching of Harry Rice in order to make way forj a.dditionaf batting strength among his outfielders in favor of Bob Fothergill, the Bengals, probably have as well balanced a group of gardeners as any team in either major =eague. Roy Johnson in centerfiefild ranks with Averill of the Cleveland In- dians as the best of the rookie out- fielders in big league baseball. Heil- mann and Fothergill are easily capable of staying with the firstj ten batsmen in their league while either are to be ranked as capable afield. Despite the successes of the veteran Tilden the hopes of the American Davis Cup entries in their quest for Davis Cup lau- rels will hardly be at a high ebb It seems again destined that the indomitable quartet of Frenchmen, LaCoste, Cochet, Borotra, and Brugnon, will re- tain the most prized of inter- national trophies for another year.
