The revolt is centered in Sao Paulo a city of 597,000 ands the chief trade center of the world's richest coffee trade area, ontaining almost 3,000,000 people. It is 4ituated immediately east of Rio de Janeiro and in from the seacoast (see map above), having as Its seaport Santos, through which coffee is passed from the hinterland. The Museum of Ipyranga (left), in Sao Paulo, marks the site of the de- claration of freedom from Portugese rule, which was followed by the estab- lishment of the empire. This in turn became the present republic. The uprising has already cost sev- eral hundred lives and much property damage. The Brazilian battleship (center) is at Santos to aid in the bombardment of the city, and the president, Dr. Arthur Bernardes (above), is preparing to wield martial law throughout Brazil. Col.
