WEDNESDAY, JULY 9, 1924 THE SUMMER MICHIGAN DAILY PAGN THRM W1EDN~SDAY, JULY 9, 1924 THE SUMMER MICHIGAN DAILY PLGU TNRUN e TITLE RACE CLO5E IN AMERICAN LEGUE Washington Loses Series To Yanks But Continues To Hold Lead NEW YORK RETAINS LEAD IN NATIONAL LEAGUE OVER SUNDAY Clinging to a slender lead of one game, Washington was still at the top of the American league on Sunday after a hard week-end against the Yankees. Walter Johnson, the wizard Washington pitcher, could not beat New York, and Washington saw its lead cut to a small margin. New York profited by the misfortunes of the Detroit Tigers and crowded the western team into third place. New York is apparently recovering from its unexpected mid-season sump. Fol- lowing the Detroit team, St. Louis was in fourth place. The Browns, who were in sixth place a week ago, have shown a decided improvement, although still far from the team it should be. Chicago, Boston, Cleve- land, and the Philadephia Athletics follow in order. It is worthy of note that but seven or eight games separate the seventh place club from the leaders in the junior league. The pennant race will be closer than usual this year. New York may succeed in winning the pen- nant for the fourth time, but the Yankees will have to fight to do it. In the national league, New York retained its commanding lead over Chicago on Sunday. The Giants seem to meet with little opposition this year. Chicago is comfortably safe in second place, with Brooklyn, Pitts- burg, Cincinnati, Boston, Philadelphia, and St. Louis trailing well behind. Unless something happens unexpect- edly, the Giants look like winners. Yost to Use Slow Movies in Lecture Coach Fielding H. Yost will use moving pictures to demonstrate his lecture to the class in football coach- ing at 11 o'clock at the Majestic the- ater today. A series of slow and fast motion pictures of the Illinois, Oh.io, Minnesota, and other home and out- of-town games will be shown. Yost will explain the pictures as they are shown on the screen. This is a new and somewhat novel way of imparting knowledge of the game, and because of the slow motion pictures to be used different plays can be studied as they are made. All students attending school now are invited to attend. A French airwoman made 212 loops with her plane in one hour and 13 minutes.
