The American league hounds may lick their chops over Clark Griffith'sI baseball carcass before the present season ends but right now the Old Fox has the satisfaction of having eluded the pack, temporarily at least. And the chase has been a long and grueling one-close to 12 years inI length. So the Old Fox's tongue prob- ably lies out of one corner of his! mouth as he gets his breath. Back in 1912 Griff performed the' same feat. That year a winning streak of 17 games on the road sent' the Washington club hurtling into first place. The end .of the campaign found the team nestling securely in second place. Chic Gandil, who later departed from baseball under a cloud, joined the Capital team that year and is, given credit for being an important factor in its sensational showing. That year, of course, Walter John- son came the nearest-up to the pres- ent spurt-that he had ever approach- ed to pitching for a pennant-winning team. At first thought it was believ- ed Walt never had had the thrill of pitching for a first place team up to this.year. That is a bit wrong, ac- cording to the records. i Griffith stepped out of active field management of the team in 1920 after leading the team to sixth place. The next yearG eorge McBride landed them in fourth place. The next year Clyde Milan landed them in sixth again and then last year Donie Bush landed them in fourth place and him- self out of a job. The club has come within one round of the pennant two years, that imem- orable year of 1912-and the year fol- lowing. The next year 1914, the team finished in third place and in 1915 ran fourth. In 1918 the team finished third. These five years were the fat- test the team ever has enjoyed-the only years it wound up in first divi- sion. There is much in the present situa- tion, therefore, to make the Old Fox grin. Niort District of France produced 1,500,000 chamois skins last year, most of them being used in local glove fac- tories.
