UURATOR O MOLLUSKS RETURNS ROm EUROPE -7-- Mina L. Winslow, curator of Mol- lusks in the University, has recently returned from a three months' trip abroad where she vk-ited the natural histo'ry museums of London, Paris, Monace, and Naples. While there, she established through personal contact an exchange relationship between these museums and the museum of zoology here. She brought back with here several lots of shells and a quantity of literature for the collec- tions here. Specimens and literature are being sent by her to tht institu- tions abroad. One of the chief reasons for her trip was to make an intensive study of the methods of caring for the shell col- lections in these museums, as well as to study certain groups of shells that ar enot found here. Miss Winslow was- the first repre- sentative from the University of M\ich- igan to visit some of these museums. She is at present planning a trip into northern Michigan within a week. He is the kind of labora- tory worker who ventures into untried fields of ex- periment, rather than the man who tests materials. Lndustry has need of both types, but of the former there is a more pressing demand. College men may have been discouraged from pursuing pure research. In this highly practical age it may seem there is little room for work which does not have an immediate dollars and cents application. But such is not the case. The pure research man is the pathfinder. With- out him our fountain of knowledge would dry up. His findings in themselves may be uncommercial, but they .establish a field for others to develop. Volta worked out the crude voltaic pile-unim- portant until bther men improved and applied it. And so with Papin in the field of steam, or VACUUM 1 CUP' k Tires are not high priced.
