Delaware, 0., June 28.-Within the
next few years there will arise on
Observatory hill on the campus at
Ohio Wesleyan university here, a huge
concrete bulk, with a long finger
pointing skyward. It will be the third
largest telescope in the world.
At that time, an old man may look
from the doorway of an out-of-date
brick house near the great improve-
ment, and recognize in it a monument
to his perserverance and the domin-
ating ideal of a life that will have
passed the four-score and ten mark.
Saves Large Fortluie
Prof. Hiram M. Perkins, now,89
years of age, started teaching mathe-
matics and astronomy years ago at
Ohio Wesleyan, a poor man. During
the long years of teaching since then
he had amassed a fortune of close
to $200,000 by fortunate investments.
But he Will die a poor man. Nearly
every cent* that he has earned and
scraped together will be represented
in the "third largest telescope i4
the world."
A story that passes understanding
is unfolded in the announcement by
trustees of Ohio Wesleyan that $250,-
000 has been contributed for the in-
stallation of the telescope. All but
$75,000 of the quarter of a million dol-
lars was given by Prof. Perkins; the
