During the war the first type of
submarine chaser was developed for
the government in the University na-
val tank which forms the basement
of the east wing of the Engineering
building. The dimensions of the tank
are 300 by 22 feet with a 10 foot depth.
Models of merchant vessels for our
Allies were also developed and test-
ed in the tank, and experiments were
made for the United States shipping
board and Emergency Fleet corpora-
tion to determine the most economical
form of cargo vessel. Models made of
paraflne wax with a mixture of four
per cent beeswax are used in all tests.
