Back in Victorian days the Christmas tree was a ,solely' family enterprise-chopped down in the woods or in someone's yard and propped up in the front parldr. HomemiAde decorations h u n g from the branches;rsome ofhthem edible, others, as experience proved, inflamable. Today, the Christmas tree, like other Yuletide cheer, can be pur- chased in several sizes, shapes 'and prices. .Decorations also vary in cost and design, from plastic bubble lights to gold plated angels blow- ing gold-plated horns. From the gigantic pine adorning New York's Rockefeller Plaza to the artificial trees on Hollywood Boulevard, Christmas trees take shapes real, abstract, elaborate and simple. Some people prefer flanging a branch or two from an evergreen from the ceiling, thus symbolizing the Christmas spirit, while otliers like their trees sprayed in gold, silver or blue. The Christmas tree business, like other enterprises, operates through the middleman, selling the trees in vacant lots through- out the country from Thanksgiv- ing until Christmas Eve. Thus, family tradition of the Christmas evergreen has grown into a nationwide business, which plays the role of woodsman for thousands of homes and cities. "At Christmas time, the volume of mlail handled through the-wAnn Arbor post office increases about 500 per cent," Postmaster Oswald J. Koch pointed out. "This is not only due to the student population, but also be- cause Ann Arbor is largely com- posed of German people, nd they do a great deal more mailing than other ' people do at Christmas time," he said. "Of course, there are a lot of things that people could do when they are mailing letters and pack- ages to speed up the handling time," Koch added. Mailing'Prbcedures He, mentioned such procedures as bundling and tying all mail which is for local delivery and all mail for /out-of-town delivery;- packing and wrapping all pack- ages; addressing all mail clearly and correctly. "And, of course, mailing all parcel post packages early," he concluded. "Actually, we fail to deliver very little mail because of illegibility of addresses. We have quite a few men working here who have be- come expert at deciphering hard- to-read names and addresses; and there is only a verysmall percent- age of mail which has to be sent to the dead letter office," Koch commented. Extra Help Because of the volume of 'mail, the postmaster said, he has hired about 130 extra clerks and carriers for the Christmas rush. The ma- jority of these people will be work- ing from December 13 to the end of the month. "We will also add a4 few more trucks to our fleet," he said. "And we have the 11 'mailsters'-those little three-wheel vehicles-to help out, too." "A number of students work here the year around on a part-time basis," Koch remarked., "They work about 8 hours a day on tat- urday and Sunday, and a few eve- nings in the week, for a total of about 20-25 hours per week. This is a big help to us. Mail Handling "On a heavy day during the Christmas rush, we can expect to handle more than 600,0Q0 pieces of mail, -both incoming and out- going, as well as 1,000 bags of parcel post packages," he said.
