DECEM 3ER.15,1957 THE MICMCAN DAILY PAC DECEMBER 15, 1957 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PM .., f. .......... ............ .. r., .-I Hot Holiday Cheer Given . By Toddies By RICHARD SALO Since the century old celebra- tion of Saturnalia, Yuletide drinks have added to the friendship and conviviality of this festive occas- sion. Cold weather around Christmas- time has naturally made the var- ious hot drinks a particular fa- vorite of holiday partygoers. .Basic equipment for the enjoy- ment of these hot drinks is a proper serving container. Tradi- tionally this has been the thick handled pottery Tom and Jerry mugs. Seek Convenience For convenience sake, the best place to perform your holiday bar- tending is on the kitchen stove. Here you can assure yourself of adequate work space and materials -the ever necessary hot Water is also very close at hand. A staple of all holiday get-to- gethers is the Tom and Jerry. To prepare enough for eight friends, beat together two eggs until they become stiff, then gradually add 4A cup of sugar. Continue the eating and add two ounces of dark rum, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and % teaspoon of ground cloves. 4 Spoon this batter into the mugs and add two ounces of hot bourbon to each mug. Fill the mug with hot milk. Heat Mugs It will help if you heat the mugs in warm water first to make sure they don't absorb the heat of the drink. Simple but effective for your { holiday enjoyment is the hot toddy. Basic ingredients are two ounces of hot water, two ounces of hot whiskey of your choice and a teaspoon of sugar. All of this is mixed together and served, piping hot. Always remember when heating any liquor that the alcohol evapor- ates. The most advisable policy is to heat it in a double boiler and only bring the liquid up to thei boiling point but not boiling. Raise Temperature. Mulled wine offers a rapid means of ridding the body of the- chills. The basis of this drink is aE fifth of Burgundy or Claret whichs is allowed to simmer. in a sauce- pan. Into the hot wine is added one cup of water, 1/ cup of sugar, a sliced lemon, a sliced orange, all- spice, cloves and cinnamon. After all this has simmered for ten min- utes, pour into glasses, place a slice of orange and lemon in each1 glass and serve. No matter how you compound it, a hot holiday drink will do much to enhance the Christmas Season. Holidays Time for Gay, Individual Clothes Ideas Ann Arbor's Citizens Help Santa in Answering Letters Ever wonder what happens to the letters kids all over the world send to Santa Claus at Christmas time? Perhaps a lot of people think that most of them end up in the dead letter office. In Ann Arbor, however, this is not the case. According to the Ann Arbor Postmaster, Oswald J. Koch, many of the several hundred Santa Claus letters received every year actually reach Santa! Rather, they reach his helpers. These "Santa helpers" are kind- hearted folks who, remembering the suspenseful pre-Christmas days they once spent, find their holiday joy in getting these letters from the postoffice, reading them and answering the requests; either with a small gift or, if the request is a little ambitious, a letter. The Postmaster says quite a large percentage of these Santa letters are asked for and answered every year by these generous people. ,Dally-Wesley Kar MEN'S NIGHT - Ann Arbor merchants open their shops to strictly male customers for one night before the Crristmas holiday. This gives the male the opportunity to shop by himself for his lady friend. One store hired models to most effectively demonstrate the latest in gifts for the ladies. By NANCY VERMULLEN Count them off-starting right now until suddenly it's New Year's1 morning-these are the d:, when fun seems to come your way, and when dressing for fun is fun! If ever you're going to be gay and individual in your dressing, the holiday season is the time. Why not try the new idea of trousers and skirt? Wear narrow, black corduroy pants attached to a matching floor-length "apron" skirt, and you're guaranteed of being a. hostess with "eye-appeal." Holiday Newcomers The Blouse Beautiful is back, in shape-keeping fabrics made with Orlon. Two luxurious new- comers to the holidays: Lace of 100% Orlon acrylic fiber and crepe of 80% Orlon and 20% wool. An extra boon to busy party-goers is their quick washability, almost-as- quick dryability. Two new silhouettes on the threshold of the holiday's most important settings are the Tendril sheath and Corolla dress. The Tendril sheath flatters the figure in slender, supple line, from its deeply V'd neckline to its small train. The Corolla dress is skirted in furled-under puffs, much like a flower held upside down. Being shown in silk, the furled skirt rises to mid-calf in front, billowing air- ily before it swoops to the heels in back., Costume jewelry is adding festive glitter to many outfits this sea- son. A large bowknot pin boasting false black diamonds will add the needed touch of glamour to "the little black dress." Endless - or almost so - chains of sparkling jet beads are being wrapped in many a decolletage for evening loveliness. Gay Materials As new as the tunes they'll dance to are this season's party shoes. Materials are gay, with silks in brush-stroking shades promising an old-fashioned elegance. Heels are tapered; wider where they meet the sole and then gently curved like little spools or, in their higher version, like eighteenth- century court slippers. Another easy lesson in party go- ing is the pull-over dress, which takes its shape from a sweater's lean and lazy fit, its elegance from the way you wear it. It's being shown in wool knitted up on fine needles for a boat-necked pullover, a thinly ribbed skirt. No waist till you walk, then you see it. Resort Fashions If you're one of the lucky ones heading south on a holiday this winter, don't miss the new resort fashions. The color news in resort- wear is fresh marigold, and style highlights are culottes for evening, low-backed swimsuits and beach shirts of silk. t ALL WOOL ___ A3 BLANKETS3 54x72 All Wool yellow felt Block M. .......$10.00 54x2 All Wool yellow felt Block M. . .....$13.00 54x72 All Wool Yellow Chenille Block M....$16.00 60x80 All Wool Chenille Block M..........$19.50 pp 72x84 All Wool Extra Large Chenille Block M. .$22.50 60x80 Extra Soft Wool Yellow felt Mich.
