Christmas Carols Rewritten For Modern 'Buying Times' Suggestions from Morrill's CAPE CANAVERAL: Beginning of Longest Shooting NI 1CL .5 fR e ST A rC 4EA ES Boards ess Playing Cards e Tallies e Scores BOARDS BOARDS M A A M%4 Crane & Eaton's Stationery Christmas Cards -- Bo) & Rack Christmas Gift Wrappings Cartridge filled pens Esterbrook, Sheaffer, Waterman Desk Pen Sets Fountain Pen & Pencil Sets Desk Calendars Desk Sets Scrap & Photo Books Novelties Buxton Key Cases ible Typewriters h-Corona Electric oia The time has come to rewrite fthe words to Christmas cals to fit, these modern "buying times." "Rudolf, the Red Nosed Reindeer" might be improved by new lyrics more in tune with the times. Rudolf, the red nosed shopper Travelled 'round from store to store Looking for grandma's present A dollar, he could spend no more. All of the little children Ran to try on new space suits Rudolf screamed, "That's the present And the little gun that shoots." Grandma, she will love these gifts With them she can play ' Picture her with helmet on Grandma will look real gone! Then how the children loved her As they shouted out with glee Grandma, the modern space man Better than Elvis Presley-, Commercial Influence The commercial has had its in- fluence in modern life, too. "Jingle Bells" seems to have special at- traction for the merchant. The Michigan Daily's version of the song might run as follows: Michigan, Michigan Daily's what we' sell. Read It conscientiously You can then foretell O! what's on here, Who'll speak there When the game will be If you want a Job or such Then read the D.O.B. Poetry. Renovated Poetry is not immune to this vicious pastime. "The Night Be- fore Christmas" might be brought up to date and shortened for greater effect. 'Twas the day after Christmas And all through the house The children were screaming "My dad, he's a louse. I wanted Pat Boone hits And what did I get? A do-it-yourself home Brain surgery kit." The poem, of course, is much longer but there seems to be no need to continue in this vein. The idea has been presented and the fun of rewriting the songs and poems of Christmas can enliven any holiday gathering." W)- The longest shooting range in the world begins here. This is the Air Force Missile Testing Center, a 12,160-acre com-' plex jutting from Florida's east coast near Cocoa Beach. Seven years ago it was a neglect- ed and barren windswept dune, almost separated from the main- land 'by the, Banana River, with only one land trail leading into its interior through swamps and sand. Ground Guarded Now it is the carefully guarded testing ground of the Army, Navy and Air Force where men seek to send missiles soaring into space and over the Atlantic Ocean for more ,than 5,000 miles. The range itself extends past the Bahama Islands, &uerto Rico, th6 Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha to the British-owned Is- land of Ascension in the South Atlantic and possibly beyond. If you hang around here long enough you can see the scientists testing everything from a $4,500 air-to-air missile to a four-million- dollar . missile, such as the Air Force Atlas, designed to span oceans and continents. Throughout the chain of islands, sparkling in the blue tropic waters, are 11 tracking stations. Nine are connected to Canaveral by under- ground cables. Boom Produced The advent of the testing center plus the enlargement of Patrick Air Force Base, 18 miles to the south, has produced a boom in Cocoa Beach, once the haven of what Floridians called the "35- cent tourists." All around the two centers - Patrick provides logistical support for Canaveral -- spanking new motor courts and hotels in the million dollar class are springing up. Beach property sells for $750 a front foot and sometimes higher. Beside& ballistic missiles, the test center is also used for ; guided missiles.' The 'first missile launch- ing here took place July 24, 1950, wl en a captured German V-2 rocket carrying an American-built WAC Corporal was launched' CapsaIBlossomied Since then the cape has blos- somed with huge cranes for raising the missiles into firing position, test towers for stationary testing of engines, launching pads, under- A7d]i\ti.]iL7w* iA3iR1T1 t3J 1r' 1 ground storage depots for volatile fuels and shops. Those who live in and a Canaveral have become thor accustomed to the high-p roaring whine which preced launching of a big missile, bu so they still dash from their to watch the big "bird" clim the skies. The missiles are for perhaps three itinutes clear day. The residents also know of the launching pads are u which service and thus h generally accurate knowle the missile fired, despite curity precautions. ~x1 DIAMOND N with WEBCOI (yot I, *H IFI SY * Bogen DE " Garrard F 0 Goldring 0 Frazier, J HI-Fl 1 1317 So.
