ALBERT GORE ... .in atomic energy discussion By DONALD KURTZ University Health Service is a miniature hospital. Although the work of the serv- ice is largely that of a clinic, it health safety for students and seeks to promote health educa- also gives attention to general tion. Health Service is centrally 10- cated on campus to serve, the rou- tine medical needs of the student. Its staff, composed of- doctors from University Hospital, treats students' routine needs. The service, open to students only, requires that each student in the University take a physical examination. The student may have his examination taken by the physician of his choice at home. Vaccinations Needed, Students must be vaccinated for smallpox. Students not having been vaccinated in three years re- ceive shots at Health Service. The entering student is also given a chest x-ray to detect possible tu- berculosis. Every student in the University has his own medical folder. More than 1,000,000 of them have been on file since 1913. All students taking four- or more hours of credit are entitled to Health Service privileges. Those taking less than four hours may receive these services at a nominal fee. Advantages of Health Service include ,the free x-ray examina- tion, advice and assistance in health problems, 15 days of gen- eral hospitalization during the se- mester for $17 a day (for urgent conditions only), surgeon's fees for acute conditions, simple drugs and dressings and ambulance fees in emergencies. Parents Notified Reports to parents are made of students contracting serious ill- nesses, regardless of student age. Health Service also houses an Infirmary in the same building. Office hours correspond to classes. Appointments with physi- cians are given for special cases only. However, physicians are on call for room or out-of-hour serv- ice to convenience students. Health Service is mostly an out- patient clinic, but the inpatient ward houses 60 beds. At Health Service, students re- ceive immunizations required for ROTC, for trips to foreign na- tions, or for trips to University summer camps. These shots are free. Doctors Available Seven doctors are available in the clinic, performing 16 types of service: general medical, mental hygiene, lab, allergy, physio- therapy, othology (ears, nose and throat), optholomology, dermatol- ogy, emergency'dental care, diag- nosis, minor surgery, orthopedics treatments, X-ray, gynecology, consultation and chest diseases. These clinics on the'second floor are visited by referral by the gen- eral clinic staff physicians. Health Service opened in 1913. It moved from an old building to what is now the Museum Annex. In 1939 the present building was constructed. Health Service's allergy clinic has been called the finest of any college or university Health Serv- ice in the nation. Allergens are in- dividually made up in the service's own laboratories. sr!:.+ "r',S':$":rpri,. r;.t.','",,,- f" .r }}"w x .. SEN.
