Y, DECEMBER 7, 1957" THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE! _. IEEBR7 97TEMCIA AL ~l PSYCHOLOGY FORUM: Prof. Boring Lectures On Motivation Problems By BRUCE COLE "Enthusiasm, is the friend-of ac- tion and the enemy of wisdom," Professor-emeritus Edward G. Boring, of Harvard University, re- marked during his lecture yester- day on "The Motivational Predic- ament in Research." Prof. Boring said that the scien- tist starts looking for the truth, inspired by his own enthusiasm, However, he is prejudiced by his o,%n cnthusiasm, although he does not realize it. Schools Inspire The schools are like the scien- tist, Prof. Boring commented. They inspire the students with enthusiasm, but they teach them in such a way as to build up their own "in groups" which direct the students along a certain line of thought. Even with the individual not af- fliated with any organization, Study Finds Students Alter APolitical iw A preliminary study has indi- cated a changing attitude of law students toward entering politics, a University of North Carolina po- Jlitical scientist said Wednesday. Prof. Robert E. Agger told the Political Science Roundtable that many first year law students in- tending to enter politics do so be- cause they have a personality in- ' clination toward it. In contrast, third ryear law stu- dents have a tendency to enter politics for "bread ~-nd butter" reason or to promote their own practice. He emphasized these conclu- sions were most tentative. The study he described was made on law students at a Southeastern university law school. He said the study included con- sideration of such variables as so- ciability, or a person's ability and desire to w'ork with others; his desire to manipulate others, his self-confidence and his cer- 'tainty about democratic dogma. k iHe said the study suggests there is some sort of relationship be- tween a political organization and the type of peyson withiin it. "It may be that personality-or- iented young politicos are inclined towards political organizations which stress personal interactions with constituents and others," Prof. Agger noted. such as universities, the predica- ment of motivation through en- thusiasm causes prejudice to ap- pear, Prof. Boring said. In order to remove these preju- dices it is necessary to bring a AEC Expert Commends Industries Industry's efforts to eliminate; and prevent all possible and po- tential health hazards from the use of atomic energy as a power source were praised by the Atomic Energy Commission's medical re- search director in an interview here yesterday. "Never before in the history of Phe United States industry has a new industrial effort been given such exhaustive testing and ex- tensive research into the safety of workers, customers, and any one related to its use," Dr. C. W. Shill- Ing, attending the University's In- stitute on IndIustrial Health ninth annual Selby Discussional, re- marked. Dr. Shilling noted that insur- ance companies showed no hesi- tation about insuring persons connected with the planned atom-I ic power plant in Monroe, Mich., saying that the companies indi- cated they had insured much greater risks than that with little hesitancy. Accountants Hold Forum The Ann Arbor chapter of the National Association of Account- ants will hold the first of two ses- sions in its annual Discussion For- um at 9 a.m. today in the East Lecture Hall of the Rackham Bldg. The six-hour program will fea- ture discussion on "The Forecast Side of Budgeting" and "The Con- trol Side of Budgeting." BORING ... discusses motivation critical attitude into one's own train of thought, "The individual must be able to recognize the mer- its of the ideas of others," Prof. Boring noted. Culture Influences The culture of the times influ- ences many people. This promotes much enthusiasm, because it gives people the incentive to achieve something. In this type of situa- tion it is very important that one be enthusiastic but with wise re- straint, Prof. Boring said. Prof. Boring continued, "We must accept some ignorance on our behalf in order for us to rec- ognize true genius .in others." Truth, however, will not come without searching, he said.
