The city has three hotels ac- cording to the Chamber of Comb merce. It has 71 restaurants, ac- cording to the telephone directory -better than one restaurant per 1,000 people. Despite this, the say- ing that "There's always room for another restaurant" still goes. Students Many This, of course, is because of the large student population which also explains the fact that there are 20 Gleaning establishments and 47 clothing stores in the city -also- large numbers for a city of 62,000. Ann Arbor is &ix years younger than the University - the city, was founded in 1823, the Univer- sity in 1817 in Detroit. Ann Arbor was named for the wives of two ofdthe city's founders.j Ann Allen and Ann Rumsey, soj the story goes, discovered a wild' grape arbor on the banks of Allen Creek, named for John Allen, Ann's husband. They spent much of their time there together, and the place became known as Ann's Arbor., 'S' Dropped The settlement which Allen and Blisha Rumsey had helped to found soon took this name as its own. The "s" was dropped when: the town was recorded in Detroit in 1824, and Ann Arbor it has been ever since. The University was moved to its present location in 1837, and has continued to' grow with the city since then. At present the mayor of Ann Arbor is Prof. Sam- uel J. Eldersveld of the political science department. Recently the University pub- lished a small pamphlet emphasiz- ing the longtime good relations between the city and the Univer- sity.
