________THE MICHIGAN DAILY Gives "A Balloon Debate," which will decide which of seven prominent people from history and litera- ture is most worthy to be saved, will be held by the International Students Association at 7:45 p.m. today in the Hussey Room of the. League. The idea behind the debate is that seven people are traveling in an air-balloon which begins to leak, says David Bunker, Grad., chairman of the ISA debates.. In order to save all the travelers from certain death it is necessary to throw six out. Each person will try to convince the audience that he is the one who should be saved. An audience vote at the end of the debate will' decide the question. Those taking part are Beverly Poole, special student, who will represent. "Old Mother Hubbard; Frank German, Grad., Helen of Troy; Vincenzo Peri, Grad., Diony- sus (Greek god of wine); Robert McEntire, Grad., Orval Faubus; Adnan Zein, Grad., Louis Pasteur; Michael Bentwick, Grad., Moliere; and Ian Davison, special student, Henry VIII of England. The debate is open to the public. Coffee will be served at 7:15 p.m. By SUE ROBINSON J-Hop, the traditional between semeste'r dance, will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 4. Ticket reservations for the dance can be made at the Administration Building, Dec. 16 to 18, says Linda Genthe, '58, ticket chairman. Last year the dance was held for the. first time on a week night instead of a weekend because of changes in the school calendar. The latest per of the year, 4 a.m., will again be issued for the dance this year. .J-Hop Begins Reportedly the oldest social event on campus,J-Hop originated in February, 1877, when approxi- mately 20 couples danced to a four-piece orchestra. This first "Junior Hop" and the succeeding four were presented by the juniors. However, the sixth dance was taken over by a group of fraternities who renamed it the "Society Hop." But the juniors in 1883 came back to sponsor it once more as the "Junior Social." In 1900 the dance had record attendance. Before that any man who did not ha've a date from out- of-town would stay at home. J-Hop was an annual affair un- til 1913 when a group composed "partly of students and partly of local riff-raff" crashed the dance causing 425 damage and injuries to a janitor. Because of this the 1914 J-Hop was banned. Tradition Resumed However, popular demand caused the tradition to be resumed during World War I and a miniature dance was held in the Union. Mary Frances Jones, '58 Ed, president of Scroll, announced that members of these honoraries and members of Theta Sigma Phi, women's journalism honorary, will act as hostesses.
