THE MICHIGAN DAILY Dorm Rooms Need Decor. CLASSIFIED ADVERTISI For Gaiety )NER-The first student from Iceland to study at , Hannes B. Kristinsson, finds work easier here than ity of Iceland. Iceland Student, 's Frequent Exams DER ferring from high school to the - university. "It seems somewhat o ridiculous to me," he remarks, "as s it may mean freedom to do noth- o ing." nDin to know4 to know ne saia.I fbers First Days 1 ie now has an almost nand of English, the navian student recalls that his first few days i States were "hectic" uage was concerned, ring the University alversity of Iceland, ays that students here re work to do outside those in Iceland. in Iceland, he com- uires academic free- a sudden' in trans- ELCOME rDENTSU gan tradition to have air styled by our orial experts, -classmen about us. Studies Engineering A graduate student in chemical engineering, he commends the fre- quent quizzing here because it forces a student to be up-to-date in his studies. Kristinsson attended the Uni- versity of Iceland for one year and then transferred to MIT where he received his BS in 1951. Iceland's University, like all schools there, is government owned and supported, Kristinsson said. Plans' To Return He worked for a paint manu- facturing company until coming here this fall with his wife and two sons and plans to return to the same company after receiving his masters degree next spring. Kristinssoncommented that Ice- landic students who wish to enter the university must take six years' of Danish, five of English, four ,of German, and three of French. Iceland has been greatly under the influence of the Americans since American troops were there during World War II, he remarked. He pointed out music and movies as especially noticeable examples. He is living with his family at the Saline Valley Farms. Add Rug, Cafe Curtains; Cheery Theme Chases Dullness from Living By NANCY VERMULLEN Dorm rooms can be deadly-or delightful. A little elbow grease and a lot of imagination can work wonders on those four "colorless-colored" walls. Why not hide a scratched desk surface with, a pretty scarf? Or a worn chair with a bright cushion? Throw pillows, cafe cur- tains, canvas-bottom chairs, mu- seum prints-Clever (and inexpen- sive!) ways of adding life to your room are endless Go 'All Out' If you want to go "all out" on your decorating kick, choose a main theme and plan everything around it. One girl we know chose an Oriental mood for her room, and made it a unique place to live with the help of black and gold lacquer, kites, coolie hats 'and bamboo curtains. Oriental-patterned spreads and drapes carried the theme still fur- ther. A low table was made by hinging two supporting boards to the underside of a top one; then painted with red Chinese lacquer. Final touch: Japanese water-color prints on the wall. Coeds from New England might enjoy recapturing the "folksy" atmosphere of their home. Try a calico spread on the bed; a hooked rug on the floor. Substitute wrought iron kitchen utensils for ash trays, and for that "extra" chair, why not a high stool from the hardware store? Do It Yourself, If you are a "do-it-yourself-er," why not make your own shelves by attaching knotted ropes to the moulding? Notch and paint the boards, then rest them on the knots-it is as simple as that!' For lazy coeds who like to study in bed, a foam-rubber bench cush- ion is easily transformed into a back rest. String the cushion on ribbons and brass hoops, and then attach to molding with picture hooks and bows. If your room has beige walls and you prefer red,, donot upset your housemother by getting out your paint brush. An easier way of achieving the bright color you want is to buy a long, wide strip of solid-colored paper and attach it to the molding. For more fun, paste up cutouts and snapshots. Take a French Tip Everyone has a bulletin board, so why not take a tip from the French and make yours individ- ual? The French tack ribbon tight- ly at the edges of the board to make a criss cross of ribbons; then they slip things under the ribbon, rather than tacking them to the board. The college room Is a bedroom, dining room, beauty parlor, smok- ing lounge and study hall all in one, so do you not owe it to your- self to make it as liveably-attrac- tive as possible? Do not be dis- couraged if you have never thought of yourself as the creative type-- Just remember that it takes only a jiffy to change the word "home- ly" to 'homey!"
