Professor's Book Warns A dvertisers Business executives should not be misled by "sensationalized writ- ings and the preoccupation of cer- tain people with unusual advertis- ing gimmicks," warned Prof. Jo- seph W. Newman, of the Harvard Business School. In Prof. Newman's book, "Moti- vation Research and Marketing Management," he cautioned against the overemphasizing of motivation research benefits to business. He added that "motivation re- search is fundamentally sound and business executives cannot afford to ignore it. Its most im- portant feature is the bringing to business of an improved under- standing of the nature of man and how he lives." The former University professor noted that the "application of be- havioral concepts in business' can provide answers to the question "what should a product be?" Other questions he noted which the technique of motivation re- search could help answer include the. problems of "how products should, be made available to people" and." how business can es- tablish and maintain' more satis- factory relationships with its cus- tomers." Role of iaxes Thought Minor EAST LANSING () - A group of newspaper editors was told yes- terday that taxes are a relatively minor factor in attraction of new industry in Michigan or in move- ment of existing plants . to other states., That was the consensus of pan- elists at the sixth annual Commu- nity' Newspaper Editorial Confer- ence, on the Michigan State Uni- versity campus. Discussing the role of taxes were Clarence W. Lock, deputy state revenue commissioner; James W. Miller, state controller, and Prof. Denzel C. Cline of the MSU econ- omics department. Lock said that when the Daisy Manufacturing Co. of Plymouth recently announced plans to move to Arkansas he studied the reasons. "In my analysis, it was largely payroll," Lock said. Cline said that channels of product distribution and trans- portation costs usually were more important considerations than state or local taxes. Hoover Street 3 Blocks west of Intramural Building A .uick, thorough wash at a moderate price HOW "WEASELS" REPLACE DOGS TO UNLOCK ANTARCTICA'S SECRETS XE the mountains of Antarctica really higher than Everest? Will its melting ice eventually flood our cities? Do its frigid'200- mph winds create the world's weather? Do its gigantic coal deposits mean there's gold, oil, uranium too? For 137 years men couldn't stay in Antarctica long enough to find out. All they had were dogs -and courage. Today, machines do the muscle work so teams of American scientists can stay the year around to unlock Antarctica's secrets. Jeep-like weasels use electronic "dish-pans" (see illustration) to probe for crevasses that can swallow 20-story buildings. Bulldozers carve roads across frozen seas so giant trace tors can haul in 60-ton supply loads. It's all the result of Better-ness-the Ameri. can conviction that nothing's impossible. And the machines that give you Better-ness depend on Timken tapered roller bearings. They rollthe load-and they're tapered to take the crunching impact from all directions. You'll find Timken bearings virtually elimi- nating friction, reducing maintenance and keeping machines on the go wherever Amer- ica's wheels and shafts turn. By pioneering new markets and uses, we've become the world's biggest manufacturer of tapered roller bearings-and we're still growing' fast. WANT TO HELP CREATE BETTER-ness?
