U U Blott Calls Desire Key to Linemen By CARL 'RISEMAN You're a Big Ten line coach, how do you pick your linemen? Jack Blott, veteran Michigan line coach, summed up his thoughts in one word, "desire." "Given two players with equal physical ability, the one factor that will determine position on the squad will be desire-to play, to learn, and to win," Blott elabor- ated. Blott has been coaching the core of the Michigan line for over thirty years, the guards and tackles. This Year's 'Core' The first string "core" of this year's line consists of Jim Orwig at left tackle, Larry Faul at left guard, Mary Nyren at right guard and Jim Davies at right tackle. These four players, along with the center, are responsible for the offensive blocks that open the holes for the backfield to run through. On defense they are expected to stop the rushes of the opponents. 0youspeeu, sze, enuurance, strengh l1hree and coordination. Coordination is needed by a good blocker and tackler, speed for and endurance for the contact o: downfield blocking, and strength the scrimmage line. Blott proudly remarked that his line was able to execute all these requirements. Yesterday at practice, the line By BARRY COOPER under the tutelage of Blott under.
