Stern Finds Automation Suits Aged Il PEN EVENINC COLUMBIA RECORE Older workers are often better equipped to cope- with automa- tion, a representative of organized labor indicates in "The New Fron- tiers of Aging," to be published by the University Press Nov. 15. Written by James Stern of the UAW-CIO Automation Commit- tee, the book declares: "The de- creased physical effort and in- creased responsibility on most automated jobs makes the mature responsible, reliable worker a bet- ter choice in many instances than the husky adolescent. "In one automated plant where discriminatory policies against older workers were followed," Stern goes on, "tlae average age of the work force was 25 years old. During the course of a labor dis- pute at this plant, the manager admitted ruefully that the policy of hiring only the young had its, drawbacks. "He had a volatile work force and would have been better off with some older men with fami- lies, homes and a more responsible outlook on life." As automation increases, Stern suggests, the seniority basis of workers will have to be increased.
