Simple Rules Govern Good Tie Selection Shirts, Suit Patterns, Colors Aid in Choice Of Proper Neckwear By NANCY VERMULLEN Ever stand in front of a tie rack and wonder which tie to wear? You won't have to rack your brain over that rack if you keep a few style rules in mind when getting dressed. Stick to solid colors with neat under-the-knot or side effects for1 striped business shirts and popu-I lar three-button striped wool- patterns in neckwear are always in good taste. Solid-color ties go best with small checked business shirts and solid wool-worsted suits. All-over textured ties harmonize with solid shirts sand striped wool-worsted suits. Diagonal striped cravats go well with fine-line striped shirts, but make sure the tie is dark for contrast. In almost every case, a dark tie looks best with a light suit and a lighter tie is right for a dark suit. With a drab fabric you can empha- size brightness in the tie; with a bright suiting wear a more subdued tie. In the case of a suit or jacket with several colors in the fabric, try to pick out one of these and match or harmonize the tie with it. Avoid duplicating the pattern of the suit in the tie. For instance, with checks don't wear a check tie or a striped tie with a suit with a strongly defined stripe. Wear in- stead either a solid color or a tie with an unobtrusive, yet totally different desgin. Lending distinction to the array of lightweight wool challis ties are neat foulard patterns, Ivy in ap- pearance, in colors to harmonize with today's suit tones. Really special are the slim wools trimmed with leather. Wear one to accessorize an Oxford cloth but- ton-down collar shirt and wool cheviot sports suit and you'll be grooming yourself for success. Just remember that ties should harmonize with the suit and the occasion, and you won't find them such a "knotty" problem after all.
