Tie in '29 Back in 1929, only two years after the stadium was dedicated, the two squads played to a 0-0 tie. Doc Morrison played his last game for Michigan that day and twice made key tackles that bogged down the Hawkeyes on the Wol- verine two-yard line. In 1939, it was Michigan's Tom Harmon and Forest Evashevslki (now Iowa head coach) against Iowa's fabled Niles Kinnick. Kin- nick drew first blood, lofting a 50- yd. touchdown pass that gave Iowa a brief lead. But Harmon, with Evashevski leading the interfer- ence, then began to romp. "Old 98" galloped for four touchdowns to pace the Maize and Blue to a 27-7 victory. Overcome Lead In 1953, Michigan overcame a two touchdown lead tallied by Iowa halfback Eddie Smith to eke out a 14=13 victory. Beginning in 1954, the Stadium witnessed a strange chapter in the series. It all began with eight minutes gorle in the second period. Jim Maddock, an unsung sopho- more quarterback, took command of thegteam with the Wolverines trailing, 13-0. Michigan was losir 14-3, as the second half opener Mike Shatusky, a third string half back, scored a touchdown in ti third period and Iowa led 14-1 With minutes remaining, no senior quarterback, Jim Maddcx took charge of the squad. With th poise of a ten year veteran, Mad dock led the team towards th Iowa goad. With less than tw minutes remaining in the gamn Shatusky hit paydirt for his sec ond touchdown of the game.
