Bowers had played his best game, scoring the first "M" touchdown on a 38-yard pass from Stan Noskin and intercepting a pass to set up the Wolverines' last touchdown. However, his play on the last score had end coach Matt Pata- nelli cheering. Takes Out Two "He went down field on Pace's fake pass and then took out two men with a driving block on the goal line to clear the way fo'r Pace," Patanelli explained. "He is one of our finest downfield block- ,ers," Patanelli added.' }"He's a very intent ballplayer, constantly driving until the whistle blows," Patanelli declared, "that's how he got injured." Patanelli explained that Bowers could have eased up a little on Martin, but that might have given Martin an extra yard. "It goes to show how wrong a coach can be about one of his players," tOosterbaan said of him. ',I thought he would never be high- er than the third string, but in two years he turned from a worried player ton a confident, re kless player, and a real asset to his team," Oosterbaan stated. Not Big or Fast - According to the coaches -Bow- ers physical assets were not spec- tacular. He is not exceptionally big or fast, but he knows what to do' DeWitt Talks- With Tribe Executives CLEVELAND (IP)-William "Bill" De Witt, former owner and general manager of the old St. Louis Browns, has "discussed" with the Cleveland Indians' executive com- mittee the job of Tribe general rnanage . The Cleveland News predicted yesterday De .Witt would be ap- pointed within 10 days. De Wtit flew to Cleveland Mon- day and held a 10-hour interview with some of the Indian executives, returning to his home in St. Louis Tuesday. with what he has. Patanelk de- scribed him as a controlled run- ner-not wasting any steps but doing his job. His one asset, all agree, is a ,fine pair of hands. This was the second shouder injury for Bowers. In his freshman year he seperated his other shoul- der requiring an operation and missing his sophomore year of competition. When he returned last fall he had difficulties getting his legs in shape." "But by the last two weeks of the season he looked very good," Patagnelli said. 'Will Miss Him' "We will really miss himi," re- marked Patanelli. "Especially with the other left ends, Gary Prahst and Chuck Teuscher "owed down because of injuries," Patanelli ex- plained. Bowers was the only man miss- ing from practice yesterday. How- ever, Pace was not wearing any pads due to his still ;ailing hip. John Herrnstein appeared to be running strongly, and gives hope of being an asset in Saturday's game. The Wolverines spent the after- noon preparing defenses against Iowa plays for this Saturday's en- counter.
