A year later he tried again and once more returned to Britain. As he became known he was persuaded to return once more and soon was considered "the out- standing foreign born musician in the United States." He became a naturalized citizen on May 26, 1956, in New Jersey. Gerry Mulligan, born in New York and raised in' Philadelphia, started his career at 15 years of age, arranging for a local band. For the next few years he wrote for the Gene Krupa, Elliott Law- rence andClaude Thornhill bands.' In 1951 he moved to the west coast. Shortly thereafter he began to tour the country and in 1953 led the featured American unit at the Paris Jazz festival. Recently he has been selected to play at the first two Newport Jazz festivals in Rhode Island.'' Mulligan Writes Mulligan tries, to make time in his schedule to write and think.
