21. 19l5 THE M1ICIGI~AN DAILY 'PAGE 91 * z' I By The Associated Press WaltKowalczyk, Michigan State's burly "spring blacksmith" barreled 36 yards for a fourth quarter touchdown run and pulled Michigan State out of a hole for a 19-14 Big Ten football decision over Illinois yesterday. His running mate at left half, the fleet Blanche Martin, scored two first-half touchdowns and gave MSU an intermission lead of 13-0. But Illinois made the game a, spine-tingler for the crowd of 64,- 353 that braved scattered snow flurries and 36-degree weather in Spartan Stadium by socking in two fast third period scores for a mo- mentary 14-13 advantage. How- ever, the last quarter touchdown by MSU sewed the game up for the Spartans. OSU Still Undefeated Ohio State continued its march .toward the Rose Bowl by beating a stubborn Wisconsin football team, 16-13, in a bruising game. A 14- yard field goal by Don Sutherin in the third quarter proved the mar- gin after the teams fought to a 13=13 score in the opening period.' Wisconsin threatened constantly, but as was the case in the Badg- ers gampe at Iowa last week, it fumbled at crucial times. The strong Buckeyes were quick to take advantage of the breaks. Don Clark and Galen Cisco were the big guns in the Ohio State attack. Clark scored the first Buck- eye touchdown on a brilliant 71- yard run while Cisco scored the second on a 5-yard smash over center. Iowa Ekes Out Win A fluke pass reception by -second' string junior halfback Kevin Fur- long with nine and one-half min- utes' left to play broke up a score- less battle in the mud and snow and gave unbeaten Iowa a 6-0 vic- tory over Northwestern. After a yard gain at the line and a pass-failure on the Wildcat 33, quarterback Randy Duncan faded back and hurled the ball, a hunk of mud, toward the speeding Furlong on the 15. In other non-conference games, Indiana defeated Villanova, 14-7, and Purdue defeated Miami of Ohio, 37-6. By The Associated Press The Oklahoma Sooners fought successfully for their football life yesterday, with a come-from-be- hind win over Colorado, 14-13. With four and one-half minutes gone in the final quarter, halfback Clendon Thomas. drove for eight yards around left end for the ty- ing marker, and quarterback Carl Dodd converted to put the Sooners into the victory column once more: Sooners Outplayed, Entering the game a four-touch- down underdog, Colorado, the na- tion's leading rushing team, com- pletely outplayed the Sooners for three periods. Using their multiple offense to its best extent, the Buffalo Herd kept the mighty Sooners off balance most of the game. The final touchdown, however, reversed the decision, giving Okla- homa its 45th straight victory. Second ranked Texas A&M rack- ed up its 12th straight victory in beating Baylor, 14-0. The crowd of 42,000 watched the Aggies break the scoring lice after six minutes ir, the game had passed. After that, with Roddy Osborne and John Crow leading the defensive team, the Aggies beat back the rugged Bears with great defensive plays. Osborn Scores First Osborn scored the first Aggie touchdown from the one yard line after Crow shad rammed through the ponderous Baylor line for 23 yard in a 54-yard drive. The final touchdown was credited to Crow. Comes from Behind Eleventh ranked North Carolina State, behind by 14 points, roared back to tie fourth-ranked Duke, 14-14, behind the clutch passing and brilliant running of quarter- backs Tom Katich andDick Hun- ter. With only 38 seconds to go in the first half, Katich connected with halfback Dick Christy on a 52-yard yass play for the first Wolfpack touchdown. North Caro- lina State tied it up in the third quarter when Hunter passed to Christy from the five for a touch- down. The touchdown was set up by Jim Oddo who intercepted a. Blue Devil pass and ran it back 53 yards, , just minutes before the final score. Ole Miss Upset Sixth ranked Mississippi fell from the ranks of the unbeaten by virtue of a 12-6 upset by Ar- kansas. After Mississippi scored a first period touchdown, Arkansas tied it up in the second and scored the decisive touchdown late in the third period. Notre Dame Wins Seventh ranked Notre, Dame handed out a 13-7 beating to Pitts- burgh behind a spectacular pass play from George Izo to Aubrey Lewis which covered 74 yards. Ninth ranked Army beat Vir- ginia, 20-12, after coming from behind in the fourth quarter. Vir- ginia, a two touchdown underdog, seemed well on its way toward one of the season's biggest, upsets be- fore the Black knights finally got moving. Bob Anderson scored twice, and Dave Bourland passed well to help the Cadets on to vic- tory., Tenth ranked Louisiana State also was hit by the upset scourge, as it fell to the hands of Florida, 22-14. ?J12 WILLIS PACKING CO.
