tine assignment: get feature story
on Saturday's football game.
Check Big Ten files for back-
ground on case --Michigan vs.
Minnesota. First meeting between
schools in 1892. Saturday's game
marks 48th meeting. Wolverines
hold 29-15 edge over Gophers in
series; three tie games. Michigan
needs a victory. Minnesota needs
a victory. Just an ordinary case.
"A-Choo"
3:18 p.m. Pull out past issues
of Michigan Daily. Files very
dusty. Can't stop sneezing.,
3:20 p.m. 1892 newspaper re-
veals beginning of glorious fu-!
ture - Michigan 6, Minnesota 16.
3;26 p.m. Open 1903 file.' (Re-
member that Editor hinted I
might find.something of interest.
"Cantor," he said, "whatever you
do; don't you dare forget 1903; it's
the key to your whole story.")
1903 makes me sneeze. Dust is
abominable.

3:34 p.m. Sneeze. Dust scatters,

Allergic to dust. Read further -
story tells of football game be-
tween subjects of case. Game in
point - Oct. 31, played at Min-
neapolis.
Huge Crowd
Seems that all eyes were fo-
cused on gridiron when hard-
fought contest ended in 6y6 tie.
Everybody crowded down on field
-officials unable to restore or-
der. Huge crowd of 20,000 busy
making noise and trouble, game
called two minutes early. Michi-
gan team leaves scene; Minne-

sota team

freezing fans leave scene.
Minnesota athletic equipment
custodian notices Wolverine water
jug left on field. Munson appro-
priates crock, takes paint and
brush and adorns jug with ma-
roon and gold trimming of the
University of Minnesota. Paints a
huge "MINNESOTA 6" across top
of jug, and almost invisible
"Michigan 6" at bottom. Gives
jug no further thought.
"Come and Get It"
One week later, letter bearing
Ann Arbor postmark arrives in
Minneapolis. Letter from Fielding
H. Yost; Michigan coach states
his desire to have stray water
jug returned. Munson replies that
"Mr. Yost will have to come and
get it." End of 1903 episode.
Suspicions aroused, Yost does
not forget easily. Besides, water
jugs cost money even in 1903.
Still looking for feature story.
3:47 p.m. Sneeze. Dust too
thick. Files all look dusty. Try one
more.
"Just a Hunch"
3:52 p.m. Play a hunch. Check
favorite reference book - clinch
story. In 1909, Wolverines return
to claim jug (Faith in Yost re-
stored). History says Munson took
his paints, and this time being
more fair-minded, colored one
side Maize and Blue, and other
maroon and gold, leaving a space
down middle for scores of future
games. Jug became symbol of
midwestern football. Rivalry re-
newed every year. Jug now called
"Little Brown Jug." Original jug
neither little nor brown. (Ah-ha,
get them on a 7:12 for sure.)
4:00 p.m. Close case. "Just a
hunch, chief. Sometimes you're
lucky, sometimes you're not. Just
a hunch."
4:01 p.m. "You mean you
played a hunch, is that what you
mean, Cantor? Sometimes you're
lucky and sometimes you're not.
Is that what you mean?"
4:02 p.m. "Yeah, that's what I
mean."
